Trunk hard to close? Have to slam shut

I searched and searched and couldn't find anybody that had this issue yet. But my trunk opens fine, the issue is when you go to close it. You have to really slam the trunk hard to get it to close. If you try to close it regularly, like every other car, it won't latch(close) and it will come back up like you are opening it. Anybody on here ever had this issue? I hate to keep on slamming it shut because it will eventually ruin something back there. The Jeep in question is a '96 XJ SE, manual everything.

This, or possibly just tighten the screws that hold the latch into the bottom of the lift gate. I have seen cases where the latch mounting screws were run loose for an extended period, and the screw holes in the lift gate were "wallowed out", allowing the latch to move quite a bit in the lift gate, no matter how tight the screws were. If that is your case, you will have to repair where the latch mounts to.
