Tire rub. Shackles and/or bump stops?

Hey guys,

Bone stock 2000 XJ here. I just installed new Crown leaf springs and Mamba wheels with 235/75/15 BFG KO2's. When I have 2 people in the rear and some things in the trunk, the rear tires rub the fenders over bigger bumps/dips on the road.

Firstly, i measured my rear shackles and they measure about 4". The Jeep is definitely all original, so I am very confused because i thought the stock shackles on the XJ are supposed to be 3". Weird thing is, the Jeep sits level with the new stock replacement leafs.

My first thought was to raise the rear about an 1" with JKS 1" shackles. They came in the mail and they measure 5", only 1" over stock. My understanding was that 2" longer eye-to-eye is about 1" net lift. Is something odd with my stock shackles? Will this JKS shackle net me the 1" or only 0.50"? I would add a small spacer in the front to level, whatever route i go.

Secondly, bumpstops. Should i add an 1" extended bumpstops? Maybe i can use that to prevent the tires form hitting?

Should i do one or the other, or both?

Do the rims have excessive offset ? 235's on a stock XJ should not rub. You should make sure the bumpstops are the length necessary to stop tire rub with your suspension, longer if required. Shackles 1 inch longer result in 1/2 inch of lift.

They are the Mamba MR1 from Quadratec. 15x8 with 0 offset.

I think i'll install the shackles which i suppose will net me only half inch since mine are 4" eye to eye (which is still very odd to me). Any clue how my stockers are 4" yet everyone else states XJ shackles are 3-1/8"?

CJ7-Tim, regarding bumpstops, you say "make sure the bumpstops are the length necessary to stop tire rub with your suspension, longer if required". When i do so, is it bad that I'll probably hit the bumpstops regularly since we often carry camp gear, bikes, friends, etc.?

If you regularly carry heavy loads, you should consider leaf springs with a greater load capacity. An Add-a-Leaf installed into the leaf spring pack, or a good quality 3 inch lift kit leaf spring should solve the rubbing. The bump stops are meant to be used, so if you just install extended bump stops, as long as you are not jumping the Cherokee it should be fine.
