Unhappy stuck in park

Dear all,
I managed to drown my 98 jeep recently and killed the alternator which has since been refurbished and reinstalled. The problem has become a little more serious in that I now have power but my little beast won't start and I can't get it out of park. It just clicks merrily away, all lights come on the dash, click, click, with no interest in moving a piston whatsoever. Its stuck in park really well. Any suggestions?
Regards
Ian

I would check your trans linkage for anything that would bind up the shifter cable. I would also check the brake lever safety cable and make sure that it is not disengaged. It's a small cable that runs to the shifter from the brake pedal that doesn't allow you to shift without the brake pressed.

You need to check the dist cap and your coil to make sure you're getting spark, but first and foremost have your battery checked out/recharged.

hmm well seeing as you said you took your jeep swimmin and killed your alternator, if the engine wont turn over that leads me thinking that you may have hydrolocked your engine...some other people on here may be able to help you a lil more, only thing i can think of is to put a bar on the flywheel and try turning it slowly and see if the engine turns.

Red face

Thanks guys. She's a pretty tough old enging, after I drowned it I didn't try to run it...for long. However, my enging is fine, I had to swap out the starter motor and she got all happy again. Embarrassingly enough the reason I could get it out of park it seems was because the handle on the shifter had slipped up, very ordinary. She's all happy now, I took a fair bit or bark off and drained a bit of claret out of myself as well as draining the oil out of the engine but its all good.
