Someone tried to steal my 89XJ... again

Hi guys, 3 kids on a moped tried to steel my Jeep. The ignition was all beat up but after a 24 hour lube and ignition jiggle I can now get the key in and it starts the motor. However upon starting engine there is a shocking noise in park and neutral and drive. Sounds like something hitting a fan and very loud.

3 months ago a someone came to steel the Jeep. Following the assault the transmission then slammed into gear as they had dragged the vehicle, but that got cured following advice on this site by lubing the linkages and driving over rough ground, on that occasion the axle had shifted. The ignition had been hammered so I was in good practice to unpick enough to get a key in.

Any ideas how what this sound is you would not want to drive down the road. I imagine the gear selector has taken another hammering as there were boot marks from it being kicked.

I use this vehicle to get to hospital for treatment so pissed this has happened again.

Many thanks

Update

Update. You can shift the automatic transmission lever out of park just by hand action alone without the ignition key turned, straight from park into neutral motor off ( you can't then return the lever to park unless you start motor. If you press the button in on the gear selector stick there is a click appears to be steering column/wheel area? But the louder sound with motor running is like metal held in a fan, makes dogs bark.

Could the auto transmission park lock to the fly wheel be making contact with the flywheel? Any thing else would be a help, please make a suggestion.

How do I sort this?

I have searched youtube. Found similar noise to clogged trans cooler screech but this could be wishful thinking. All I know is totally new situation after attempted theft. Could a slack stretched trans cable do this? Something at steering column is clicking when I depress button on auto shift stick. Maybe if I start the motor and hold in the button on the auto shift stick, sound will go away?

Mrs listened and she compared it to manual transmission when you cant select gear and you crunch the gears.

It must be a nice looking Jeep to attract so much attention.

You should fill out your profile with your Jeep information and
the fact that you are in the UK. You have a right-hand drive 89 XJ, right?

Does the Jeep move in Drive or Reverse ?

I suppose you have insurance. Would it cover the damages of an attempted theft?

Hi thanks, the Jeep is an import 1989 4 litre automatic left hander. Yes there is drive and reverse. I have listened to 'the mystery sound' in the dark of night just a moment ago after the initial surprise. Sounds just like a symbol after been struck with a bonger as you put the symbol on a table... the frequency increases. I have insurance not sure if it's covered and this is the second attempt in a few months. The Jeep is a 2 door so someone must want it a lot could be resold in Europe. There is little help to defend yourself in UK... as the thieves were braking into the Jeep Mrs was on the phone, the law never showed up so we had to stay up all night. Thieves return several times?

I have a 5-speed in my Jeep and have no experience with the automatic.
Did they mess with the transfer case, too, and leave it between gears?

If you put "89 XJ" in the thread title, that would catch the eye of Cruiser54
and his advice would be as good as anyone's.

You're not the Lone Ranger. Someone tried to steal our Toy station
wagon during the civil war here in 2011 and had the dash all apart.
The Jeep was up on blocks with the wheels stored.

Hi thanks, will try to change the title. I did move 'the other lever' to 4x4 for a brief moment and back with no change to sound but the vehicle was stationary at the time, so maybe vehicle should be in motion to engage as the 4x4 light on console did not illuminate. Not sure if I should run motor in case I'm wrecking something but what have I got to loose?

Good to know that I am not the only one, did you get your jeep back on road or did they get some parts?

We were back in the US during the war. Someone saw the thief in my car and tipped off my pastor friends. They got my mechanic and went to the house. The mechanic recognized him as the apprentice of an auto electrician he knew so he called out "I'm your father. Why are stealing my friend's car?" and the apprentice left with nothing.

A week or two later someone else tried to break in the house but a neighbor scared them away. I think they away with got a front driveshaft that time. No problems since, though.

Can't change title, tried. If anyone knows how to bring thread to attention of Cruiser54 I would be grateful!

Can't imagine that the working transmission could suddenly die because someone tried and failed to steal a Jeep XJ.

sometimes you get faults happening at the same time but unlikely.

I suggest you lift the bonnet in Park with the engine on and find the source of the sound. The only places it can be are at the front of the engine and within the transmission bellhousing.

It is conceivable some mutt has damaged your engine or move something so the mechanical fan or the belts are hitting. The electric fan is only supposed to come on with the A/C or high temp.

If it is the transmission area, this is a lot more complex. I do not recall hearing anything similar whilst shifting levers.
