Shifter stuck in park, button wont work

96 XJ... so everytime the jeep has been sitting for more than an hour, i have to fight the shifter button so i can get it out of park. the button on the side of the shifter gets stuck, and it will take up to 5 mins of messing with it before it pops in and i can shift it. once the shifter has freed up, i can move it in and out of park or any other gear without issue.... WTH is going on with this thing?

Pull off the handle. See if the cable that is actuated by the button will work with the handle removed. If not, then pull the console and see if the lever that drops in the notch on the quadrant is connected to the other end of the cable.

I don't own an XJ any longer, but I still think they are the best of all the Jeep products ever made. My XJ was my favorite vehicle in my 50+ years of driving.
So...I stick around and give advice.

Yep, the first time is always interesting though. After you take it off once, its much easier.

Seems easier with the shifter in the 1-2 position. X2 on the face punching. It hurts.

While pushing the button in, tap upward on the handle with a rubber mallet. You won't hurt yourself this way.

Pulling with all your might toward your chest is bad too, though it will avoid face injury.
