Removing the center console on a 99: How?

I need to yank the center console out of my 99 Cherokee. Getting to the screws is no problem. My question is: Do I need to pull the shift knob (T knob, auto trans) off to get the console out? If so, what's the trick? I was looking at it and I can't figure it out.

Thanks,
Jim

Pull the shifter handle straight up to get it off. Of shift the trans in 1/2, crawl into the back seat and reach over and yank the sucker straight back to pop it off.

I would assume the mount is similar to the old ones. Pop the shifter bezel off and look for mount points there. Pop the 4wd selector off as well and make sure there are none there.

From there, remove the center console door and the center console to check for mounts under it.

Once loose, feel for mounts up under the dash, or eye ball it and remove those as well.

Do I need to worry about yanking the shift release cable out of the T knob? That'd be my biggest fear.

No. Once you have it off, you can see that the shifter handle just has a botton that pushes down when you push the side botton in. On the end of the shifter is a small plastic nub that gets pushed down and disengages the shifte handle lock on the selector.

Also, both the plates that the shifters come through just pop off and that makes it easy to get the console over the shifters.
And I think there is a screw under one of them.
