Remanufactured/Rebuilt Engine - What to do?

Hello,

My question is this: what engine rebuilder/remanufacturer would you use to rebuild/repair/replace your XJ engine and keep it ECONOMICAL and RELIABLE? I have evaluated the following companies, and found wide variety of options/prices:

1. Jasper - $3,000 with kit, not installed. $4,000 Installed - 3yr/100k Warranty
2. ATK/Vege - $1,900 - warranty unkown
3. Local Rebuilder - $2,600 - rebuilds it himself, 3 year/100k

Jasper seems to have a great reputation, but they are very pricey. Cherokee is an '01 XJ Limited 4x4 that I have been overall happy with since I bought the vehicle as a vehicle to tow the boat, but it just is not trustworthy to drive on a long trip due to engine tapping/knocking due to what I believe is piston slap.

It did have some known issues when I purchased it (A/C and Engine Tick/Tapping), but I have truly enjoyed driving it to from work, and towing the boat. It feels very stable on the road, etc, and after looking for another vehicle to replace, I am turned off by anything in my price range, and I can't afford to drop $15,000 for a vehicle now.

In my area of SoCal, rebuilds cost around $2200 installed, with one year warr.

Wow, for $3,300 from Jasper I think I would go with the ATK 4.7L stroker motor @ $2,800... At least you'll get more power and a good warranty from the company that MOPAR chose to produce their re-branded stroker.

Thanks for the suggestion but I would rather not go with the stroker as I am happy with the HP, the fuel economy as it is, etc.

Besides, I have found that my '01 is a coil pack and supposedly (according to these rebuilders is a slightly different core). ATK Performance doesn't even list an '01 Stroker for XJ.

Why not buy a good used motor for $3-800 ? Any 1991-2001 XJ or ZJ block will work. Low mileage 4.0L can still be found. A quick search shows at least 7 in Florida with under 100,000 miles including 2 2001's.

Have the 0331 head tested, they have an issue with cracking -> http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391831
