P1718 code

My 2000 XJ has had the check engine light on since I brought it home last year. I ave tried looking up the code and have gotten several different causes for the code. One website says its the O2 sensor. Another website says its the Throttle position sensor. A third website says its the transmission fluid temperature sensor. I'm attempting to avoid taking it to a mechanic, but don't know which diagnosis to believe.

My 2000 FSM doesn't show P1718 as a valid code. Are there any other codes? Did you clear the code(s)? What code reader did you use?

that code # does not jar memory or show up -

Is your CEL on?
>> If yes - take it to an auto part store many stores do a FREE scan.
>> Try a different scanner.
>> the alpha character is a 'P' , there are 'B' 'U' and other alpha characters.
>> this is a US spec jeep - not a third world vehicle ie England?

And post ALL codes, any information in freeze frame for the code (P1718) and if know any issues.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

Currently, I'm using a hum+ because its all I have. There are no other codes showing up, but the check engine light is on. I have to fix the issue before I c get it registered. Where i live, there i mandatory emissions testing and a check engine light is an automatic fail.

Take it to any auto parts store and have them scan it for you.

I took it to 2 different auto parts stores and both found on P1718. When I tried to erase the code with the code reader I have, it says erase failed. I'm trying to get this figured out before February of next year as the check engine light being on will cause an automatic fail.

Sorry this got lost or forgotten -
Very rare issue and the code is a TCM issue and info is in trans diagnostics, likely why info was hard to find..

P1718-EEPROM FAILURE - corrective action replace TCM.

Let me know if this helps

If your code reader won't clear the code have you tried a hard reset by disconnecting the battery and connecting the pos and neg terminals for 10 or so minutes?

Works on mine, both my jeep and other vehicles.

I've never heard of that failing to clear the codes, but there could be a reason they remain that I don't know about. Of course, if there is something wrong I would expect the codes to set again after a while of running.

A code reader is just that code reader and often very lacking, you want a scanner.
I don't recommend dumping the system adaptive's and stored data esp important in newer systems.

Clearing the code may work but some codes will clear and reset if the conditions remain - So it wil not appear to clear.

As jtec mentioned, if the fault/failure is still present and unresolved, the related trouble codes will store again, usually right away.

not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who would pervert the Constitution” Abraham Lincoln, 1859.
