Oil Analysis: Potassium and Sodium present.

Does anyone send their oil off for analysis? I sent off samples from my last two oil changes, and both readings have come back with small amounts of potassium and sodium. Looks like coolant is getting in the oil. What’s strange though, is that the second sample had less amounts than the original. Any ideas why that is? How would that be improving and not getting worse?

Does the analysis mention Ethylene Glycol, the main component of coolant ?

Potassium and sodium is table salt.

Close. Chlorine and sodium is table salt.

Common metals used in oil additives are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and barium. Key elements that you will want to look for are boron, chromium, phosphorus and silicon. All of these elements are associated with antifreeze and, if found in engine oil, can be an indicator that you have a coolant leak.

What kind of oil do you use & weight of oil?
What kind of filter?
Did you use the container you had your lunch in, to send in the oil samples?

Although, with the potassium, it's sounding like an antifreeze leak of some sorts...

Why I make sure to use only oil that says gluten free on the label. They didn't find coronavirus at least.

I would rely more on how the dipstick looks or smoke coming out of the exhaust as indicator.
