The never ending 8.25 vs dana 35 questions

I just got my build sheet from Jeep corporate and was shocked to see listed “Corporate 8.25 rear axle” and “3.55 rear gear ratio.” Its a 2000 Jeep XJ SE. I assume this is the Chrysler 8.25 rear axle? Below is a pic of my rear dif cover. Is there a way to tell if I have 27 vs 29 spline without removing an axle?

Yup, Chry 8.25. The last 27 spline was mid 1996, so it should be 29 spline.

The 8.25 axle housing is thicker and also larger diameter than the D35. The 27-spline axle shafts on the pre-1997 8.25 are a bit better than the D35 axle shafts, but the 29-spline 8.25 is much stronger.

To bad we don't have 3.73 or whatever comes on the tow packages in the rear ends.

Is there a worse gear ratio than 3.55? Is there a 3.07 also?

What ever my 99 two wheel driver has is the bottom of the pile for gear ratios, I will tell you that

the xj is the only jeep left in the driveway
