loss of power, HELP

my XJ just started doing this last night.... every once and a bit, ususally after a turn, or coming off a stop light, the car totally looses power, so i put the pedal to the floor and after a second of dogging around, it redlines and its smooth sailing from there on out. also, today it has been occasionally idoling xtreamly rough at stop lights, but not often. i have no clue what this could be....the only thing i have done to the car recently is installed a k&n filter in my stock air box....and i dont see how that would be the cause of my problem......help!!!
thanks
Pat

You may want to start with a tuneup, if it hasnt already gotten one. Cap, rotor, plugs, wires, the whole nine yards. Check for spark in the coil, and check to make sure the fuel pressure is normal. It could also be your crank sensor. Unfortunately a rough idle and cutoff could be most anything, any other symptoms?

nope, there really arent any other symptoms...my gas guage recently clunked out on me, so maybe the fuel system is starting to bug up? i purchased the car in march...and i was told by the previous owner that plugs/wires/etc were done about 5000 miles prior to my purchase, i guess he could have been lying, but for som thing that small, i dont really think so......i guess i may have to break down and take it to a jeep dealer

Could probably be the fuel pump.... that seems to be the culprit with alot of it.

I had a small tiny fuel leak on the hose coming out of my fuel filter. Fixed the hose and replaced the fuel filter and it quit bogging down

This is not just BS, it is experience talking, so listen up.

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it at the valve on fuel rail. Should be over 30psi. If not, trouble shoot fuel problem.

If you got any plugs other than the cheap Champion, (like platinum tips) get rid of them and install Champions. Then cap rotor and wires if necessary. Don't have to get fancy with the wire either, it is a waste of money.

I just got through with exactly what you are living now........

They are for newer cars with the hotter spark, that have coils for each cylinder and mounted close to the plug. Older designs, like my 90, the spark is not hot enough to keep that tiny little platinum tip clean. Just a little crud and it is fouled. They will work for a while and then...........misfire...........
