Looking to buy an XJ; questions

Hey guys,
Just looked at a 2000 XJ with 144k Miles on it. Body is in decent shape. Very little surface rust on the body. Undercarriage is pretty clean to. He cracked the front or the frame off roading and welded new steel to the body. 4x4 doesn’t work since it needs a new front drive shaft. Tires got a lot of tread life left with a 4” lift. Doesn’t have a headliner, and most of the dash board is taken apart (all the parts are inside the vehicle just needs reassembly). Steering wheel is a bit sideways to drive straight. He thinks he didn’t align the steering box correctly when he worked on it. He’s asking $2200 for it. Wondering if it’s worth it to offer $1500 and either do most the work myself with my brother in law and get what I can’t do fixed by mechanic.

To many things you said I don't like.
You could end up going down this rabbit hole trying to straighten this out.
I say pass on this one and keep looking.

It’s a tough choice because so many others with similar mileage in decent shape are going for around $4-$5k near me

Where are you located? Someone on here may have one stashed that they might be willing to part with :-)

It is not really the dash being apart that is bugging me.
But still kind of is. Just trying to sort that out might be a chore.
And even the front driveshaft stuff not so bad but is the transfer case OK not really making me think what I think.
It is really that whole cracked frame, he fixed, steering wheel kind of sideways, steering box not adjusted properly thing that bugs me.
That and the other stuff just makes me think the worst.
Oh and I am not even thinking about the 0331 head that is on that Jeep.

It seems abused and neglected, are you willing and capable to take on the potential problems and additional costs ?

So he says he used to off road it but he says he took care of it. I got underneath and there is nothing more than a little surface rust, no rot or crumbling anywhere. The transfer case he said is perfectly fine. He sold the front drive shaft.

Sounds like you could be over the $4-5k in purchase and repairs and could be a nightmare and much worse than what seller is saying, unless you are looking for a time and money sink I say pass.

Good choice. That was going to be an ongoing headache. You would have regretted it.

If the body is solid and the Uniframe not ruined, it is the possible basis for a rig.

I am always suspicious when a driveshaft is missing, it just shouts axle or transfer box issues. I bought a J20 without a front driveshaft, removed to make it more economical. Yep, it needed a new driveshaft and a ring and pinion which had teeth missing. But if you have access to a second hand drive train for reasonable prices, it is just wrenching. Wrenching is better than welding.

Interior headlining is easy, if you have one to hand. The inner workings of the dash, particularly the ventilation, can be maddening. If this is to be a DD you may get fed up with it not working.

Sounds like a project so price it accordingly and then put lots of hours in, or pass on it and get a better example. When I look at these things I imagine what it will look like when I have done A b and C and whether I would then want it. I pass on stuff which has major components changed because I just know that it will not be good when fixed.
