Looking at a 99

I know, use the search but it doesn't work on my phone or tablet.

I will be looking at a 99 XJ and if all is good I will be buying it.

I have some questions:

At 50 MPH in Drive with an auto, 33s and 4:56s what would my RPMs be?

Do 99s come with the Dana 35, 8.25 or both?

Do they have the same head issues a 2000 or 2001 will?

Other than rust what should I check for.

Comes with both. I want to say that whenever there is a D35 it will also have ABS. But not sure.
What I do know is I don't get ABS. Hey I am old so cut me some slack. Never seen an 8.25 with ABS.
Also since I am guessing it has 4.56's that it is an 8.25. I would hope that nobody would waste their time building a D35.

Go to CJ7-Tim's post. #4. Just an illustration but more then enough to identify the rear.

Should not have a 0331 head or coil pack like an '00 or '01. Should be a distributor a one.

Other then rust just the usually stuff. Fluids, leaks, etc. Take her for a nice long drive if you can. Get up on the highway. If you can hit a pot hole or two. Good way to get death wobble to present itself but not a sure thing. Play with the shifter on the TC to see how smooth it is. If the guy will let you I say pull a spark plug or two. All the electronics. Make sure all the windows work. Both from driver's door and their respective doors. Washers front and rear. Hit the rear defogger switch and see if it heats up. If it has heated mirrors check them two. If you have a meter can just check the continuity for the rear defogger easy enough.

As far as I am concerned nothing I wrote above in that last paragraph really matters. Depending of course on the asking price.

Sorry for the verbal vomit just typing stuff as it popped into my head.

4.56 is the correct gear ratio for 33s (4.10 is ok too). The AW4 has an overdrive almost as steep as the 42RLE. You'll want an auxiliary trans cooler, if it doesn't have one. They run hot, especially with larger tires.
HP 30 front.
Both rear axles. D35 1990-01'.
Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01.
No cracked head issues.

Sounds like a built Jeep as 33s do not fit a stock Cherokee. Max is 30" x 10.5 before you risk rubbing and so you should be seeing a lift of around 4" or more. If so, how has it been built and has it been done well?

I don't have RPMs for 50MPH, but here is what I recorded when I had my 33's and 4.56 gears (and 7" lift):

65 MPH, OD, with TC locked: 2250 rpm; In 3rd gear: 3000 rpm
70 MPH, OD, with TC locked: Just under 2500; In 3rd gear: Just under 3250

You could guesstimate that 50 MPH might end up around 2000 rpm

From the seller: "1999, 4.56 gears, 174,000 miles. Mile marker 8000 winch, orbfab front and rear bumpers. 33 inch tires but needs new (current tires have dry rot, could last a year could last a day) Underside is good shape. Dont know the lift kit (lifted when i bought it) Eaton electric locker in front. aftermarket radio but stock speakers in it. Plus a cheap Cobra CB"

I will be buying new tires soon. If the 33s on it are two big I will go smaller, which I would prefer anyway. He sent a video. It is lifted and the front fenders have been trimmed, but look like a nice clean job."

The person I am buying it from is a friend of a another Jeepers I wheel with. The seller is an MP on post (where I work) and owned it since 03 and the previous owner was an Army Black Hawk pilot.

It is titled in Michigan (Soldiers home of record) but the story is it has spent its life in Bama until about a couple years ago and now in MO.

Rust is my big concern. The seller claims there is no rust, we shall see.

Garage
Check for rust in rockers and floor pans and behind rear wheels.

I go look at it tomorrow afternoon and we will see how it goes. I'm curious to know how much left it has on it, how tall are the stock Springs when installed?
