Jeep Won't Start...does nothing

2000 135K

When I turn the ignition to the Start area, absolutely nothing happens. Engine doesn't turn over, just nothing. I tried to jump it thinking it was a dead battery, but to no effect.

All accessories turn on fine, everything has power, horn, etc. I was thinking maybe one of the starter relay fuses blew, but checked them and they're ok.

Maybe the starter died? I don't hear the bendix engaging or solenoid. I'm at a loss.

Thoughts?

can you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key to start?

I believe so...all the normal sounds happen. Beeps, buzzes, etc. just no engine turnover.

http://jeepin.com/features/nss/index.asp

use the search feature at the top and search for "nss** cleaning", or
"neutral safety switch"

check your battery terminal connects.. more than likely not it, but worth a shot if thats what it is instead of something expensive. if they are loose, the accesories will turn on with a loose/minor connection but the starter needs more juice and if they are barely connected, or not tight, theres your problem. just make sure they are well cleaned and tight.

Swap the starter relay for the A/C clutch relay and see if it starts. The CPS will keep it from running, but the starter will still work.

If still nothing then you might try turning the key to start and moving the gearshift, if you have an AW4, around a little, or a lot and see if you hear any starter action. If you do then the NSS needs cleaning. If not it could still be the NSS or the ignition switch. Phil

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure it's the NSS that needs to be rebuilt/cleaned. As soon as the weather clears up where I am I'll work on it. I have plenty of guides so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Typically if it's the CPS, it will crank but won't fire.

This sounds like the NSS just needs to be cleaned. It's a 30-60 minute project, depending on how slow/thorough you are. Symptoms that your NSS is getting dirty:

a) your jeep shuts off at random
b) your jeep won't crank in park
c) your jeep won't crank in nuetral
d) your reverse lights don't come on when you shift into reverse
e) a frantic combination of a, c, and finally b as you are driving down the freeway with no power. After that happened twice I finally cleaned my NSS.

If b and c are happening, a good way to test that it's not a battery or starter is to put the Jeep in park, turn the ignition to the on position (should hear the fuel pump come on along with your check engine lights) then open the relay center under the hood and jump the starter relay with two screwdrivers or a set of needle nose pliers.

What sucks is I didn't learn the relay trick until after I learned how to jump a starter with a screwdriver. That way just makes you dirty from having to lay on your back in the dirt, or the grease covered parking lot.

Depending on the type of girl you have out on a date when your jeep dies, the relay fix will either impress her or turn her off. If she gets turned off, you really didn't want to date her anyways did you?

Hey, newb here. I've been having similar problems with mine lately. It suddenly stalled after my boyfriend had to hit the breaks hard to stop quickly last night and I think the switch needs cleaned or just flipped/reset... only problem is, I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS! Um... help? I have an 1988 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer. I think its in the back on the passenger side. Anyone agree/disagree? I need some help soon because I had to leave it in a church parking lot.

I think you'll get allot better response if you post your own thread, and include information like all the symptoms starting with does it turn over?

I don't think the neutral safety switch is your problem - but I could be wrong.
