Unhappy Help! Creaking Noise when Stopped in Drive

Hi all,

I have a '99 4.0 XJ, well rusted up here in MN. A couple of days ago I began hearing a creaking, verging on groaning, noise coming from what feels like the transmission area when I am stopped but the car is in drive. The sound comes and goes, and every once in a while continues after I put the car in park. I have tried listening for a more specific cause, but no success. The noise may continue after I start driving, but it is honestly hard to tell because the car is so loud anyway. Any ideas??

Also, this occurred right after I had the muffler replaced, after the old one rusted out and fell off. New one and tailpipe held on by some clamps and creative hanger. I don't think the two are related, because I listened at the exhaust exit and it sounded normal, but maybe they could be...

Thanks in advance,

Given the recent exhaust work, a good place to start troubleshooting would be to suppose that part of the exhaust is touching something on the underside.
