HELP can't get starter to work ?????

i have a 96 xj . ok went to breakfast and came out and could not get starter to work. everything fine before. turn key and all lights up with break light staying on (pulled the plug on break sensor and even jumped the conector with light going out ) all seems ok but starter not working. have a hard time getting the shifter to move from park to neutral. seems like it does not wont to shift out of park. if i fiddle with the shifter it will do so but not like it should. yes it has a lot of miles on it. parked on the street and can't move it. Help

I had a similar problem with my 89' a section of the starter was going bad. whene the starter was in the "right" spot it worked fine, but at times it would leave you stranded. so jumping it did not work. So I got a new starter + core like $80 bones and 30 minutes and everything is good to go.

94 yj: stock everything and 4 angry squarrels under the hood.

If you're experiencing shifter problems, the most likely cause of your no start is the NSS or the shift linkage.

Check the ignition switch and the linkage between the ignition(lock) cylinder and the ignition switch.

Doh, you have a 96 so no linkage going to between the cylinder and switch. but there will be a shift interlock there. also check the shift linkage as Bushytails suggest.

If you can get it into reverse, see if the backup lights come on.

I'm with the other guys, sounds like a linkage slipped.
