where does the negative cable from battery bolt to on 1989 cherokee xj

The ground is a lug through the inner fender just a few inches from the negative terminal.

Sorry, no.

It is bolted to the passenger's side of the engine either AT or NEAR the engine dipstick tube stud.

Whoops. Thinking about the later models, not renix. On the later ones battery griund and engine both go to the body, without a direct link. Sorry.
