Fuel Pump Noise?

So tldr had a catastrophic muffler failure. New muffler installed by shop, went home and crawled under to inspect work with engine running. All looked good, but, I noticed there was an audible humming noise from gas tank. Presuming this was the fuel pump, is that normal to be able to hear it while at idle and laying underneath it?

Just curious.

you can hear them esp when tank is low... never under 1/4 tank is CW.
Wyo likes this.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

Not quite agree, the fuel pump shouldn't be heard. Especially if it's loud.

They do hum but you hear it clearly only at start, when they are pressurising the lines. After that you have to get real close to hear it. they are rubber isolated so you cannot detect the vibration from the fast spinning vanes inside it.

If you can hear it at idle you may want to check the mountings.

'88 Jeep XJ owner here who had a failed fuel pump out in the desert (115 degrees). They do hum a bit at start up (actuating). But when you hear a slightly hi-pitched hum when the truck is running, that means its failing. It's a relatively easy fix. I got one at O'Reillys and took it to a shop in Las Cruces, New Mexico, They didn't even have to drop the tank. A few hours later I was back on the road. The pump cost me about 70.00. Labor about 250.00. Replace it = peace of mind.

So update on this, I crawled under the Jeep while it was idling, noticed I could only hear the fuel pump with my ear literally an inch away from the fuel tank in one spot, so I'm not overly worried, may get it swapped out next time I take it to the mechanic.
