Fuel Gauge Question

Recently my fuel gauge is showing empty and low fuel light is coming on when starting only shut it off and restart and it is normal and works fine, it does not seem to matter how full or empty the tank is and doesn't do it every time seems to be random at the moment.

2001 XJ 4.0l 127xxxmi. 4x4 AT

What should I start looking for to fix this?
Can this leave me stranded? I have a full moon wheeling trip planned tomorrow night through the desert and will have my lady with me, I do not want to chance a stranded situation with her.

Any help would be appreciated.

Take a large sleeping bag and flask of cocoa.

It could be the connector at the back of the instrument cluster, I am not familiar enough with the 2001 to confirm this. On my 1995 I tap the front of the cluster and it all works from then on.

my '98 (when it's below 1/3 tank) will when cranking it up kick the light and buzzer on for a bit then come up as I'm driving it. very dis concerning when you think you've got almost 1/3 of a tank left for the light to come on.

look at 8E in the FSM for a 'actuator test' this will check - the gauge and bus .
SCan for codes there are some fuel sender codes @ P046x.
Any issues with fuel PUMP- recently swapped in a new unit? Excess cranking to start.
You refuel at @1/4 tank and NEVER see E empty? maybe a fuel treatment to clean deposits on sender*.

* there was an issue with deposits and fuel readings that GM addressed in a TSB - simple solution was a fuel treatment IIRC a common brand. I will research if you like.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

It does not start working again unless I shut the key all the way off and restart, sometimes I will have to try a few times, when working right the fuel gauge comes up on second click before start and then no issues only happens at start up.

I have had no issues with the way it starts or runs.

I am getting no codes.

I always refill around 1/2 tank.

I just used the Techron fuel system cleaner 1 tank ago and do about every 4-6 tanks.

The jeep has always started fast and easy and even more so since I did the new AGM batterie and Big 7 wire upgrade.

This issue seems to be random it did this a couple times when I first got it then nothing for a couple months now the other day it did it 3 times in one day.

I was wondering if there was a corresponding fuel pump issue.
No codes - are you using a scanner IDK if those codes will show key trick.
At 1/2 tank - wow I thought 1/4 tank would get a comment.
Yes techron was the suggested additive for mentioned deposit issue.

When the low fuel lamp comes on do you notice anything else - charging volts, temp,
I will look at the circuit and post- see if anything else on that circuit to help with this.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

I do have a cheap scan tool from HF it is new and seems to work but shows no codes.

All the other gauges seem to work fine.

I will go test the cluster and let you know what I come up with.

unfortunately being intermittent this will NOT be fun.

As you know the test now, doing it familiarizes you, SO when fuel issue arises that can be a test, also have you tried to drive when it says low fuel - observe gauges speedo, as mentioned charging, and a quick read of the codes.

If I think if an easy path to trouble shoot I will add.

forgot to add this diagram.

I want to add with a pro scanner we could compare fuel gauge signal voltage normal and when acting up, really allows driver seat diagnostics.
For those following I will add splice s138 and s111 details.

I don't have access to a pro scanner.

jtec I do appreciate the help, but I have to ask is there some kind of legend that will explain all the different symbols on the wiring schematic for the elect/tech challenged?

I went on a little wheeling trip tonight and for the first time the fuel gauge decided to slowly creep down to the empty mark and kicked the low fuel light on while it was running.

That is the first time it has done this while running, I shut it off and on the second try of turning the key to the run position the gauge came back up and worked fine for the last 50 miles of the trip with no issues.

the comment about pro scanner is comment on how I worked these in the shop, they are great and as mentioned allow driver seat checking. BUT they are not a DIYer tool $$$.

I am curious how it operates (vehicle) when the issue happens, what else might be acting up, A clue maybe.

Sorry about the diagram they are like road maps to me simple easy self explanatory . there pages and pages in the OEM manual and in less time than a beer break could explain* BUT typing that out IDK. To start just follow the lines and ASK exactly what confuses you - letters, numbers shapes - copy and past is easy.

* unless your from NJ or calif. then IDK

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.
