Front Hidden Hitch for winch?

Currently shopping for a 97+ Xj. (I guess this question only applies if I get a 97-98 xj sence the hidden hitch is only for 84-98 xj's) I often drive up in snow and on muddy roads. Where I live in Oregon there are more trees than people. So Instead of a spendy locker and huge tires I figure that it might be best to simply get a winch. Alas I really don't like the idea of 200 pounds of spendy bumper and winch semi-preeminently mounted to my daily driver. Well except maybe in an accident!
Anyhow I was looking around and discovered a company that makes a front mount hidden hitch that is rated at 9000pounds and can have a winch mounted on it. This seems like it might be the right ticket for me. So dose anyone have any experience with them? Thanks for your time.

the reese class 3 front hitch for the jeep cherokee XJ 84-01 is rated at 9,000 lbs winch line pull. that's what i have, from hitchfinder.com
here's a picture of the sticker, to verify that it is actually rated at 9,000 lbs.

I bought a front Hidden hitch for this exact purpose. Hidden and Reese are the same company now. Just get a winch plate and a winch and you will be all set. I think a 8000lb is plenty but im goin with a 9000 just to be on the safe side.

I started out with nothing and still have most of it left.

Im getting tired of thinking...guess I'll do some wishful drinking.

the metal loops on either side of the hitch are beefy as hell. i picked a hitch over a pair of tow hooks/brackets because i just don't see a hitch being torn off of the front of an XJ like tow hook brackets have.

i left my stickers on, it looks like 01jeepxj took his off.
ive got so much vinyl on that XJ so far, another couple weren't going to hurt
etrailer.com has cheap winch plates.
when you're done, itll look like this:

or this

The only thing that worries me about using my front reciever for winch mount is the hieght of it when mounted. I know when I take mine off road I'm constantly digging the front loop I have in my reciever into the mud. I'd hate to damage an expensive winch.

This is the setup I have, and have been using for more than 10 years now. There are a lot of advantages. For certain circumstances there are also some disadvantages. In my case it works perfectly. I have had winches permanently mounted in a front bumper before and for me, I would never go back to that setup. For what you want, I think this would be an ideal setup.

You don't need to leave the winch constantly mounted on the front of the Jeep. In fact, you shouldn't. I leave it in the back of the Jeep, even when I'm out wheeling. If I get stuck then I take it out and mount it either to the front or the back of the Jeep, depending on which will be the easier and/or better place to pull from.

There has been a lot of discussion over the years about this, and if you do a search in the "general off-road" section I think you'll get many hits.

I really like this idea.
I think I will get a front hitch too. In hopes of a winch later.
But it will come in handy launching hte boat too, so long as the front can handle the same weight as the rear.

Ah well a front hitch sound like the ticket fro me. Thanks guys.

So do you think I could fab up some sort of Madd Max pointy steel ramming device for a front hitch mount? Now that would be cool. Umm yeah officer that's just for deer and well maybe the occational Honda!

The thing I like about getting the removable winch set up (Warn calls them Multi-Mounts as seen on http://winchcentral.com/ on their winches pages) is that the few times I've gotten stuck are when there is nothing in front of me to winch off of without digging a hole in the mud and burying a deadman or buying one of those anchoring device kits, so backwards was the only way to winch. Also, with the wiring harness in place for front and back connections, you can use them to jump start anyone as long as you have the right jumper cables that plug into the winch sockets, and that makes things a lot easier if you can't get next to the dead vehicle (and - you don't have to open your hood to clamp onto your battery). Warn sells the jumper cable set that plugs right into the winch connector; it's also on that website I posted on their Accesories page.

Really like that hidden hitch idea. I tow my jeep 4 wheels down and already have the square tube accross the front behind the valance (tow bracket). Looks like I could just weld a hitch to that in the same position as the hidden hitch. Add it to the list.......

Anyone have pics of the mounting location of these front receiver hitches? Do front tow hooks and the receiver cancel each other out? In other words can you mount both?

Thanks
