Not so rare here! Trolling the auto classifieds I've seen lots of cherokees with the hidden winch. The pre96's have the setup like mine. 97s-99s has the opening under the bumper somehow.

You can find more info in this thread:

And pictures of how it fits together here:

More than an export thing, it seems it's a Chile thing. Read over on NAXJA that here in Chile a winch gets a SUV classified as work vehicle and exempt from some tax, hence most of the Cherokees sold got them.

If they weren't so heavy I'd strip them from junked vehicles and resell them in the US. Not that they're heavy duty winches or anything, but they're sure nice to have in a sticky situation.

You could sell just the bracketry needed to attach it there.... media blasted and powder coated it oculd be a good solution for those who cant afford or dont like aftermarket bumpers.

Im the guy who makes new gauges, check out our gallery at Teamadw.com

It seems the main problem is not the bracketry, but the winch itself. The bracketry could probably made with a couple steel plates, some bending, and some welding.

The winch, however, is designed to be mounted vertically with feet toward the radiator, and thus the feet need to support being pulled away from the mount.

Most winches are designed to be mounted horizontally or with the feet to the front. The forces on the feet in these cases are sheer or pulled direct toward the mount.

How much do those things weigh because I can think of more than a few people who would be very interested in those suckers over here.

Specs say the winch alone weighs 65lbs. With the fairlead and all the bracketry, it'll probably come out to around 85lbs. Via UPS, we're talking about $900 USD minimum, just for the shipping. Probably the only way it'd be financially viable for all parties is if there's a big enough demand to make a bulk shipment by sea...

So how much would people be willing to pay for something like this?

Congrats on the find! I agree that the 2-door, 5-speed XJ is the most desirable, at least to me. Mine's got the same set-up as yours, but with the "normal" NP231 transfer case. But it's also got the Chrysler 8.25" rear end, which saves us any upgrade cost or hassle unless we go nuts with other mods. I plan on keeping my XJ for as long as it will run (aka "forever").
