Blower Motor Resistor - PSA

Just throwing this out there as I've had two of them fail over the years on my 00 XJ.

Symptoms - HVAC fan only blows on 4 or high and only blows on the dashboard vents to the windshield (defrost).

Cause - The HVAC Blower Motor Resistor is most likely bad.

Part - For 97-01 XJ

For - For 91-96 XJ

Install - Very easy, less than 5 minutes, only need simple tools.

PSA - This resistor actually uses the blown air to cool itself. It installs into the actual vents where air is blowing, which cools it down. Because of this, DO NOT TEST THE INSTALLATION WITHOUT HAVING THIS DEVICE MOUNTED OR YOU WILL RISK IT OVER HEATING AND DESTROYING ITSELF AS WELL AS SIGNIFICANTLY BURNING YOURSELF OR ANYTHING IT IS TOUCHING. It will achieve a very high heat within seconds of being turned on and if it is not mounted in the vents bad things will happen very fast.

If I have missed anything please post here.

Good thread. One thing to add.

It is not uncommon for the resistor block to fail because the blower motor is pulling too much amperage. And if the blower motor itself is the root cause, replacing the resistor will work in giving you all of the blower speeds back, but the resistor will fail again shortly. You will then need to replace the blower motor for a complete repair.

It does touch on this in the video towards the end, but thought I would include it in text for those that do not watch the video.

The brand you buy makes a difference also. Cheapo resistors = failure sooner.
