4x4 popping out of gear

My son and I were clearing trees from a so called “road” we were on a while ago. I couldn’t get turned around as things were a bit tight. So I hooked up to a rather large tree that had fallen across the “road”. I attempted to pull the tree straight so we could get at it with the chain saw. As I pulled, in reverse, the 4x4 lever popped into neutral. It happened twice when things were under load. Now I know pulling in reverse isn’t the best idea as reverse is a very weak gear but should I pop into neutral? I backed off and we found another solution. Anybody have any ideas why this happened? Pulling forward is good to go, does not pop out. Thanks for the input.........

Thought I might add the 94 XJ was in low range. The transfer case is what went back into neutral, not the tranny. Thanks

If the tree is stronger than the reverse gear, you can be glad it popped out.

It sounds like it works fine otherwise. If you have any doubts, you could
check the linkage adjustment. See Tim's post on this thread.

As suggested, first check the shifter mechanism adjustment. Then consider that the shift fork tabs may be worn or damaged, and that the shift fork itself may be worn or damaged.

Or your engine and trans mounts are bad, allowing a bunch of movement to push the lever into neutral.
