All 4.0L have a casting number cast into them on the drivers side near the motor mount bracket. XJ engine blocks also have a build date number identifying when the bare block was built into an engine.

Block Casting Numbers

Year............Casting No
1987-90......53005535 (8933002665)
1991-95......53008405
1996-98......53020569
1999-04......53010449

I have read in other threads that stamped on the block about halfway up above the starter should be the vin # of the Jeep..........

Block casting number - 4.0 HO block

Does anyone know if the blocks for the HO 4.0L engines had a separate casting number? I know that heads had different casting numbers.

I was wondering if the blocks did too, due to some minor internal modifications (such as the girdles to reinforce the crankshaft mains).

Is the block casting # the same as the "motor number"?

Im new to Jeeps I’ve always built superduties and the wife wanted one so here I am starting a build for her and the Jeep I just bought is a 1998 and it has the engine serial number ending in 05 so it is newer. The engine runs like crap. Is there any differences besides the motor mounts. Just trying to make sure the pcm or something wouldn’t be wrong for the motor. Thank you in advance

A 1998 what kinda Jeep ? Define and explain the "engine runs like crap". As long as the correct sensors and engine management PCM are installed, the engine block does not know or care what year Jeep it is installed into. If the there is a problem with not running normally, you need to begin some basic diagnostics and troubleshooting to determine what is wrong.
