Thanks I was thinking that I should be able to swap just the rail but wasn't sure.

Thank you, I know about the reuse of various parts as need. I just wasn't sure if I could just swap the fuel rail.

If you need me I'll be working on my Jeep.

I can understand the budget issue. We all have other things we gotta pay for. Just sucks you can't put a newly rebuilt engine in it. Good luck!!!!

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

I hope it's not to late for me but I bought a 2000 xj with the 32rh and I have a 2000 TJ with the NV3550. I wanted to swap the xj 4.0 with the harness and all the accessories into the TJ with the NV3550. If im reading this right I would run into issues if I wanted to take the xj block and use all the TJ accessories. But what I'm not sure is if I'm going to run into issues using the xj engine because of the motor mounts. I do have the manual pcm, cps, manual trans, flywheel. Both engines are a coil pack setup.

Will this work?

Too much effort for no benefit.

The XJ engine block will not bolt in, and the XJ block belt driven accessories are in the wrong physical locations for all the TJ wire connections and A/C connections. The TJ block belt driven accessories brackets will not bolt onto the XJ block.

The XJ has an AW-4 automatic transmission.

I know this has been answered but I will ask anyway.

I have a 99 Cherokee 4.0 with way to many miles, 250K, on it and it needs replacing. I have a 89 4.0 with only 167K on it. can the "blocks" be swapped?

I intend to replace the oil pump and the crank seals and oil pan gasket for the block. I will also check the timing chain to see how loose it is. I already know that there is not much wear on the cylinders. no piston sloop.

I will be using the 99 head, it is good so far.

Questions that need to be checked on,

Pushrods, use the 99's or 89's?
Cam and Lifters should be good but how do I check them to make sure they are ok?

Any other things I should do to it while I have the engine out of the truck?

2002 TJ 4.0 engine block into a 95 TJ

I have a 02 TJ engine that my friend wants to put in his 95 YJ.... I have read the forums and dont see this direction? friend will retain all accessory and intake... just short block and hopefully head. Will the newer TJ block go into older YJ?

Hi
I have a 2000 XJ 4.0 That needs a new engine. I read somewhere that I could use an replacement short block for my year jeep, but that the heads off a newer wrangler would work/ bolt up and actually hold up better and were stronger.
Is this accurate information ??

Thanks - Chris R

If your 2000-2001 XJ Cherokee has a cracked 0331 head, buy a good used redesigned and more durable TUPY 0331 head from a 2002+ 4.0L TJ Wrangler or WJ Grand Cherokee.

Heck ya it will fit...

You might want to read a little more on engine compatibility before asking if something will fit. I can put 5 33inch tires inside the jeep.... Is that were they go, not really. Same goes for that turd of a v6 the one that comes in the 05 GC.

Find you a 99-04 GC and that engine will fit perfectly... I have done that install many times.... many... Its my go to for engines for the 2000 and up Wrangler.
Thing is also that most pull a parts are full of GCs and most driven easy. I have pulled just this year 3 at pull a part and cost just 175 plus ANY core.. They aint into rebuilding just scrap metal.. I get the engine complete with all accessories and return it with nothing but block.. sell off all those goodies on ebay and make my money back
