304 and 4.0 power differences

I have a friend with a 1975 CJ with the 304. His wife is always revving it up and talking smack on the trails about my puny six banger. I told them the other night that I think in these particular years I have more HP and about 20 lbs less of TQ, this sounds kinda weird but i guess its true. So in real world performance say we swapped what would we notice? Was the 304 underated on paper? or was it suffering from old technology and gas crunch?
They just keep comparing it to the old six in the old CJ's.

The 304 used from '72-'78 has the best performance of all the 304s used in the CJ. Meeting legal requirements for smog controls on the 304 severely hurt performance of the engine. The last two years of the 304 in the CJ were in '80-'81. The horse power and torque specifications of the last version of the 304 narrowly beat the carbed I-6 258 in use at this time.

1972-78 AMC 304 V8
Bore x Stroke 3.75" x 3.44"
Displacement 304(4.98L)
Compression Ratio 8.4:1
Horsepower (net) [email protected]
Torque (net) [email protected]
Main Bearings 5
Valve Configuration OHV
Fuel 2bbl

The 91-95 Cherokee 4.0L I-6 MPI High Output
190 hp @ 4750 rpm,
220 ft lb @ 4,000 rpm
updated in 96-01 to 225 ft lb torque @ 3000 rpm

I would rather have the FI and the better torque curve of the Cherokee 4.0L

my 305 with a four barrel puts out only 225 when it was new. i imagine if this 304 your talking about has a 2 barrle and never been rebuilt it should be putting out a good 6 or 7 squirrles. (thats standard American squirrels, not metric)

I had a 304 in a 76. It was stock with 33's. I now have the XJ 4.0. My old jeep would leave the XJ in the dust. 304 ci is about a 5.0 maybe a touch more. There is no replacement for displacement.

I cant see it being that much different. Just ,ike the old 305-307 in the 1980's olds/monte's they were really no more powerful than the 4.3 when side by side.

My uncle had a 304 in his CJ and when I drove it once, it didn't seem to be that much of a difference from the 4.0 in my XJ

If you put a grand into both engines, the 304 will kill.

Would that be a good engine swap? 4.0 to 304?
