Xj 1990 AW4, Roar and 3 not passing

Hello,

My old '90 XJ has an issue with its AW4 trans :
Everything begun with a roaring sound while driving. Nothing that scared me. I am used to new noises, and in generally it ends with removing some mud from wheels, brakes ... So I kept on driving ...

But, things went worse : 3rd speed refused to come ! When removing the TCM fuse, all 3 speeds pass easyly, but always with that roar on 3. No roar on 1/2.

Before that issue, the engine coolant boiled a little due to a too old water bottle cap, but the needle never went to the red line.

ATF 4 is clear, red, no smell, and the quantity looks ok. linkage seems OK.

When I go from "3" to "N" at the same speed (down hill), the roar stops. I a m pretty sure roar comes from tranny.

Any idea ?

Thank you for your help

First off, that's the wrong fluid for an AW4. Dex/Merc only.

Your TCU could have a bad ground and your wiring between the trans/TCU/sensors could be an issue.

I would recommend doing the following Tips to eliminate them as a possible cause:

Thank you very much !

I will try that and keep you informed.

Regarding, the fluid, there is a Jeep SB saying to use ATF4 in AW4. But maybe not with these old Cherokee's ?

Thank you Cruiser !

A little spray on these connectors, plus the TPS, and hop, the 3 goes on !
Now, I must find what is the cause of the roar ...
