Jeep hauling toter home help.

Looked all over the web and can't find any specs so I figured I'd try you guys.

My school bus toter home project needs to have the fuel tank relocated. I planed on moving it to frame side in front of the right rear tire, this will not work as it will hit the spring mount. Now my only real option is putting the tank in the storage box on the side, which I have it in with 20 gals in it, seems to not be a problem yet. Think this thing can handle 90 gallons of fuel or 659 fuel, plus roughly 50-75 lbs of tank?

I would be concerned with somebody hitting you on the side and rupturing a fuel tank. Plus you are giving up some good storage area.

It's diesel so it would be more protected then all the semis on the road. The storage loss sucks but I have the same box on the other side, massive storage in the trailer, and can move more boxes from the rear of the bus to the opening behind this one, if its needed.

My thinking is to put 30 gals in it and run that out, inspect everything, then try 40 and so on. Don't really know what else to do.

I suppose but I don't think the tanks on big trucks sit under the area where people ride. If you were hit hard enough and that storage area broke open could fuel spill into the passenger compartment? Could fire spread into the passenger area with the tank there?

Actually they are directly below the driver and passenger on semis. This would have to go through 3 layers of steel and 1 wood to get in the passenger compartment. As far as safety this would be better than school buses that don't have storage as they have just the tank hanging there, plus diesel burns hot but doesn't explode from ignition.

Not sure I can do a school bus build on jeep forum so I'm updating progress on my crawler build. Search 5.3 4l60e zj. Actually just started Tuesday when I bought the bus.

That's good.
This looks like a great build. Are planning on a camper in the front part and hauling the jeep in the back?

x2 on the build thread, and since its being purpose built as a Jeep toter I dont see why JF wouldnt let you have it, they overlook other rules when it suits them.

Being in trucking for 22 yrs, I can tell you fuel at any temp. is 8.5 lbs / gallon, also wind chill doesnt affect fuel tanks exposed or not. Your tank being mounted essentially inside the vehicle the FHWSA will probably require more and elaborate venting to ensure pressure release without fuel release, I would ask any FMCSR qualified DOT official to look at it and find out what the fed laws are for enclosed tanks.

This is why you see APU systems on trucks feeding from the standard tanks now, in the old days of Double Eagle 110" sleepers when "apu"s ran on unleaded the tanks were mounted just inside the rails on the 5th air tank mounts or on the rear deck. enclosed tanks make the feds gibber.

Anyway, I love the premise, I'm subscribed, keep the pics coming and let us know how your doing this so we can start looking for busses lmao.

Front is 21 ft of living space and seating for 12 guys, setting it up to pull my 50ft gooseneck aluminum wedge, I haul 3 zjs on it. We wheel in the iron range in northern MN, around 5 hours away, this bad boy can do it all with 1 rig, plus it's an rv so the laws are more lax

Never thought of the venting. I'll run the tank vent tubes out but will likely need to plasma a couple holes on the ends of the compartment, just don't want to weaken it any more.

Everything I've found on fuel weight is 7-7.3 depending on temp. Think it will handle it?

That will be one hell of a tow rig used for towing and this is the "tow rig & towing" section so I would think this would be a good place for this build.

Havnt u ever seen semis fuel tanks all beat up like a car ran into them? They look scary but if hundreds of them drive with beat up fuel tanks I'm sure his will be fine

Many many "CB Rambo" parking lot fights in my 22 years lmao (we are worse than the internet) and I promise, 8.5 lbs / gal no matter the temp, solemnity doesnt change for fuel, thats one reason its the basis for jet fuel, they add kerosene to improve combustion and hinder gelling, but fuel doesnt change until well below 0, and the weight doesnt change at all.
