Chrysler introduced the new 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ to the world on June 16, 1998 at Cobo Center in Detroit. The new WJ was developed in 28 months for a cost of approximately $2.6 billion. The SUV is a full unibody design with coil springs and full live axles front and rear giving it a fully trail ratable capability. The rear tire was moved to a spot under the rear deck inside the truck, and all the body contours were redone with an eye to smoothing out all the corners.

Technical Information

1999-2004 North American Market Engines:

4.0L I-6
4.0 liter In-line 6 cylinder (242 C.I.) 195HP @ 4600 RPM 230lb.ft. torque @ 3000 RPM(SAE net) EPA est. MPG: 2wd=15 city/21 highway 4wd=15/20

The venerable 4.0 liter engine had been upgraded and strengthened to make it more robust in operation for this series of Grand Cherokee. There was a slight increase in horsepower of this proven design. The engine was no longer used in the Grand Cherokee after the WJ series, having originated near the end of the 1970's as a production engine which had gone through many improvements and changes during its long manufacturing run.

4.7L V-8
The 4.7-liter V-8 engine was introduced as an all new design that has not only has stood the test of time becoming the basis for newer engines, but became a very popular choice for this model.

4.7 liter V8 (287 C.I.) 235HP @ 4800 RPM 295lb.ft. torque @ 3200 RPM(SAE net) EPA est. MPG: 14 city/19 highway

4.7 liter V8 HO (high output) (287 C.I.) 265HP @ 5100 RPM 325lb.ft.torque @ 3600 RPM(SAE net) EPA est. MPG: 14 city/19 highway. This motor was introduced in 2002 and was standard on all 2002-2004 Overland models. Optional on 2002-2004 Limiteds. Also offered in 2004 as an option on Freedom, Columbia, and Rocky Mountain editions.

All three motors run on regular unleaded 87 octane without any problems, but 93 octane is recommended with the 4.7 HO. All three motors have a 6 quart oil capacity.
