Brief History/Summary
Body / Trim Levels
- The CJ-5, along with it's predicesor the M38-a1, came with what is sometimes known as "biscuit" fenders.
- it had a higher hood than the CJ-3 to accomadate the hurricane engine along with the major body style re-design.
From 1964-1968 Kaiser-Jeep elevated the Tuxedo Park from just a trim package to a separate model for the CJ-5A and CJ-6A. A Tuxedo Park Mark IV is signified by a different prefix from a normal CJ-5 with a VIN prefix of 8322, while a normal CJ-5 VIN prefix is 8305 from 1964-1971.
In 1976 AMC did redesign the CJ5, but this probably had more to do with the release of the brand new CJ7 than it did specifically with the 5.
Engines
The Dauntless V6 was available from ’66 through ’71. In 1972, AMC lenghtened the CJ-5 3.5" and began to offer their own straight six. There was a 232 cid for a short time which was quickly phased out by the 258. More importantly, there was a 304 cid V8 offered for the first time ever.
Early cj's '40s had a L-Head (FLAT HEAD) engine called a "go devil" it had all valves in the block and put out like 62 horsepower
then they came out with the F-HEAD (overhead valves) you would think the flat head would be the F-Head BUT IT IS NOT both engines are the same block other than the valves it is a 2.2litre 134 cid engine the f-head is also reffered to as the "Hurricane 4" this overhead valave model boasted a mean 70 horsepower
