If using synthetic oil, make sure that the engine has been using synthetic oils all its life. Otherwise there is risk of jamming the engine up with old gummed up oil residues released by the improved detergent additives of the modern oils. Sometimes its safer to use good quality mineral oil and change it more frequently (every 3000 miles) if you do not know the history of the engine. These risks obviously do not exist immediately following a full engine rebuild.
