ESP (Electronic Stability Program)

Electronic Stability Program or ESP
Standard on all JeepĀ® models as of '07, the Electronic Stability Program aids the driver in maintaining directional stability. ESP will do whatever can be done, within the limits of available traction, to keep the vehicle on its intended course. ESP uses a steering angle sensor, a yaw-rate sensor and an acceleration-rate sensor to determine whether the vehicle is responding properly to driver steering inputs. Using signals from these sensors, as well as wheel-speed sensor signals, the system determines appropriate brake actions (and throttle actions with VVT 2.4L I-4, 3.8L V6, 3.7L V6, 5.7L and 6.1L HEMIĀ® V8 engine). Once initiated, ESP operates much like all-speed traction control, except that the goal is directional stability, with the system attempting to correct the vehicle from turning too rapidly (oversteering) or not rapidly enough (understeering) by applying the brakes at the appropriate wheels.
