CJ/YJ Seat swaps

One of the most common questions asked in the Jeep YJ/CJ world is,"What seats from other cars will fit into my Jeep on the cheap?" Well, this is the answer. From '76-'95 the Jeep CJ-5, CJ-7, CJ-8 Scrambler & YJ Wrangler all share one thing in common, the seat risers. The risers and sliders are identical between those years, thus making the seats, and any swappable seats, interchangable. Below you will find a list of vehicles that have been found to have seats that either directly bolt into the stock sliders/risers or, with minor modification, can be worked to fit.

  • Olds Acheiva: '96,'97
  • Grand Am: '95-'01
  • Grand Prix: '95-'01

Notes

  • Most people who install the Sunfire/Cavalier/Sunbird seats use some sort of spacer with the rear bolts to raise the back up about 1/2". IF you do this, replace the OEM bolt with Grade 8 hardware due to the "Potential Shear Load" on that bolt.
  • There also seems to be some issues with the the different year Cavi seats. Some have good luck, some need to drill some holes. I will be trying to get some definate info on them in the next few weeks.

Minor Modification Swaps

  • S10: First generation '82-'94 and second generation '94+ Requires some minor drilling to relocate bolt holes and your done.
  • Camaro: '82+, Same as the S10 seats, requires minor drilling to relocate bolt holes.
  • Ford Contour: '95-'00: Some modification is required if you have the electric drivers side seat. The pass side seat is direct bolt in.
  • Ford Ranger: '94 60/40 split bench seats: Redrill two holes and bolt the seats up to the Jeep risers and vuala! You lose the center console but get the fold down middle armrest with storage in it. They do not adjust in the backrest. Picture Link Courtesy of MetZenDS on Jeepforum

  • Explorer: 1997 Eddie Bauer Edition Ford Explorer....Write-up to follow.
  • Dodge Neon: '00-'04 Neon. Square tubing or plate needed to relocate mount holes and then the front of the riser needs to be shortened, similar to how the Rubicon Seats were done. Link to picture guide: Photos Courtesy of Jeepin1995 on JeepForum

Bench Seats

The only rear bench that can be swapped in is that from another YJ. The CJ seat does not have the same hardware mounts and the TJ seat is obviously wider. Pictures below show the YJ and TJ comparison just to visualize: Note the fender wells. Completely different.
