Well its a crappy, rainy day outside and Im bored so I figured Id make a build thread for my XJ. My third Jeep and first XJ.

She started life with me (Jan. 08)as a little grocery getter. '01 XJ, D30/8.25 with just over 40,000 miles on the clock. The carfax on it said the POs were a coulple in theyre 50s. In the glovebox were EVERY service record. all done at the dealership I bought it from. I swear they took it in to get tire pressure checked

First thing I did was ditch the cool guy mud flaps, change every fluid, and ditch the cassete player for a sony head unit and Infinity speakers. Not the greatest, but it works for me..

Obviously this little guy wasnt stayin like this long so couple of weeks later...

I ordered a AA SYE, tom woods shaft and RE 4.5SF and got to work.

Okey, A little update. My Crager steelies have seen one too many PA winters and are rusted to hell and back. I got a really sweet deal some DC1s from a guy near me. Theyre in pretty good shape. They need polished a little, but Im undecided if I wanna go with the bling or paint/powder coat em black. I really like the black and grey look. What should I do???

Here they are on the XJ they came off of...

Im not sure which way I wanna go. I havent found a good price on powder coating Ill probably end up painting em if anything. Any boddy good at photoshop? .... I aint

Powder coating would be sweet.... black or gunmetal! :2thumbsup:

Good find Kevin. I think im convinced to paint em black. I painted the wheels on the wifes WJ and they've held up really good. not a spot on em...

I think as long as I prep em good I shouldnt have a problem. It looks like those bolts around the edge come off, might leave em polished for some contrast or would that look dumb... I think I gonna find out.

We have to get together some time soon and have a wheel re-finishing party, with plenty of beer

In regards to the bolts, they're stainless so I doubt they'll hold paint well... then again I've never tried to finish stainless. Yes they do come out, and I figure I'll pull them out on mine - do the wheels up & slap them back in on one wheel and make my mind up then if I like the contrast or not.

ll be doing em this weekend. Feel free to stop by. I could use the help. Prepping them can be a PITA. After further review, Im gonna leave the bolts in and paint em black too. I dont think itll look that good stainless. As for painting the stainless, I think itll be okey as long as I scuff em up real good. Im gonna do my center caps too and theyre crome so we'll see...

this weekend is no good for me, sorry. I am working on the soft door project all day Saturday and Sunday's Mother's Day, so that's out. Eh no worries. I'll invite you over when I find time to do mine. I'll provide the beer & food, you provide the experience & good company.

:highfive:

So I got the 4 just about done. My 5th spare should be here sometime this week then I'll get em mounted.

Heres what I started with..

Got em sanded down...

Primed... I used a dark primer, maybe that'll hide some of the scratches!

Couple coats of paint...

Center caps...

Theyre stainless. Noy sure how well the paint will hold to em. If not, Ill take the paint back off and just have to go with the bling in the center!

I think they turned out okey. Theyre not perfect, but hey its a Jeep, not a Lexus

Okey so i had a couple of hours to myself today (rare!) So I decided to take care of my crappy, sagging head liner that has been driving me crazy!!

getting it out...

Getting the old foam off was the toughest part..

Ran down to the fabric store and picked up 3Yds of fabric, a can of 3M fabric adhesive. Total of 21.39$ and..

Not bad. It was a heck of a lot easier than I thought it would be. Im not much of a camo guy, but its a heck of a lot nicer than it was.

Also got some undercoating done yesterday. It was such a mess under there. Spent more time than I thought doing prep so I only got the rear half done. Hopefully get the front done this weekend.

Really nice XJ! I like those flares, they really changed the appearance of the Jeep. Are those speakers on the headliner in the rear stock or is that a special/aftermarket headliner?

I like the lights where they are. Im not a fan of light bars and the trails around here are tight and low, probably rip em off up top. I use em on the road anyway. lots of deer around me.

Speakers are in the stock "sound bar". Its just a piece of plactic that mounts underneth the headliner. You can see it in the first pic. (the one with the headliner ripped out).

And for the undercoating I just used a couple of cans of 3M rubberized undercoating. Its pretty good stuff for the price. (10.00 a can) Ive used it on quite a few of my Jeeps over the years and its always held up well for me. Duplicolor and a couple others make it for about half the price, but dont waste your $$$. Preped by using wire wheels on a drill.

Thanx!! Ive been busy on the old girl. My favorite season for wheelin is coming up and I have some club rides comin up. Some are quite a ways away so I figured I'd better get her ready. I resealed my TC. when I put the SYE in it didnt seal very well so I finnally got that taken care of. I rebuilt my front driveshaft with all new U-joints and centering ball. Also put new front axle U-joints (all non greasable spicers). And Im upgrading my tie rod and TRE with ones for a V8 ZJ. MUCH stronger than stock! Its a solid piece of steel, not like that hollow piece of crap that came on it from the factory. Also changed my dif oils front and rear.

I get some pics up this weekend. Havent installed the steering yet.

Theres a link for the tire carrier somewhere in this thread. Its not currently available though. Not sure why. He might just be backordered to much. They are made in just a 1or2 man shop. Great guy though. Worth the wait. And the speakers are stock size.

So I got the new tie rod installed...

New TRE compared to old

Installed. (Note the shiny new U-joint )

While I was under there I realized the heim on my trac bar was shot so I oredered a new one. Also ordered some JKS disconnects. The ones that I got on there are rusted to hell and the pins that mount the axle are split and loose. Theyve been rattling like hell and drivin me nuts... So thets next weekends project
