Project REDLYNER: Ultra4 Race Jeep Driven Daily...

EDIT: VillagePhotos has crashed, taken their customers money and lost all of their pictures. This means roughly 1,000 pictures in this thread are now dead links. I switched to a new server and pictures start back on page 99. SORRY!!

Pics start back:

This is way late in the game to start a build thread, so it is not a from scratch build.

I'll try to give a little back ground on the jeep and the build so far-

Number one, I have one of the most understanding wives out there. Not only does she support most of the mods, but she talks me into higher quality parts when I want to normally go cheap.

Number two, I bought this TJ when I lived in Colorado and immediately got addicted to rocks. But more importantly, addicted to the slick Rock in Moab. Every single mod on this rig was built or added with Moab trails in mind. So to keep this thread from being too wordy, I'll start throwing out some pics.

I bought the Jeep with a Rubicon Express 3.5" lift and 33"s. It had never been offroad according to the previous owner and after I inspected it, I was pretty convinced he was telling the truth. Not a spec of dirt in anything underneath the rig and not a scratch to be found. I think I got a deal.

This is a multi-stage build. Each stage represented taking to the next level of trail difficulty.

Pictures were not that great until like 2009 when we got a nice camera...

Here is a short recap of stage 1:

Day I brought it home back in 2006- I almost broke the Dana 35 because of the amount of Armor All on it:

Stage one was getting this thing so I could recover myself and be recovered. Also need to protect the easiest areas to damage- so the short list was:

Warn Rock Sliders
Warn Front Bumber
Warn Winch Mount
Tow Hooks
ARB Shackles
Warn M8000 Winch
Auburn Front Selectable Locker and install kit
Uniden CB
Kilby Gas Tank Skid

The 4 Wheel Parts show and local 4x4 board made it pretty easy to get some smoking deals:

And on went the first round of mods:

Bumper and winch:

Gas tank off, new tank on:

With the armor on, CB in and Auburn Locker front locker installed, it was time to go play in Moab:

Back at work on this thing. There must be a dozen little side projects that will need to be done to "finish" this, but my goal is to get it back to drivable and wheelable, then worry about some of the last minute details.

Tail gate bolted back, perfect fit with the spacers. Mounted the rear stinger brackets and got the stinger back on, then painted the gas filler neck:

Next up was wiring the LED tail lights:

LED's installed! These are too bright to be legal in my opinion. I did the flasher adjustment, but it didn't work. I'm having some blinker issues that will have to be worked out. Any suggestions????

#137 ·
It could be my ground. The tail lights work fine, the brake lights work fine, it's just the blinkers that are screwing up.

So here it is stretched to 100"s, 37" Pitbull Radial Rockers, and the new TNT Hi-line Zyros bolted up:

I still need:
  • New spare Pitbull Rocker
  • Custom antenna mount
  • Trim spring perches (rubbing shocks)
  • Rear spring clamps (spring is falling off of perch on articulation)
  • Figure out blinker issue

That should wrap up this mini project. Then we'll start adding to the cage, dual batteries, seats, etc.

You are my inspiration for purchasing a Jeep when I return to the states. I read every post in this thread with more excitement than a teenager who found out how to DL free pornography. I feel like I witnessed the birth of a child and then watched that child mature into a respectable man. Your jeep is much to envy and I will use this thread as a guide to building my jeep, of course, I will respect your personal style and not copy your aesthetics.

Anyway, Bravo.

Hell of a compliment man, thanks!

I'm currently looking for a rear tire carrier and was wondering How happy you are with yours? I like the look of them. How much of a PITA is it to open and close it? And do you think it will work with psc corners? Thanks.
I love the look and the function of the Gen-Right rear stinger, but with a 37" tire, it is really heavy. Also, it completely blocks your rear view. So if you can deal with that, then I don't think there is a better option. However, losing your rearview is a pretty big deal, so you have to be willing to make that sacrifice.

Still lots to do, but again, it is drivable. Here are a couple more shots-

Once I get the rear spare on (wheel + tire will equal roughly 120lbs), it will drop the back down so there isn't a rake.

Wow truely a great build!

Would it be possicle to get closeups of were the tire carrier latches to the tub on the top? I have psc corners and they don't go all the way to the hinges like yours do. I just want to see if the latch is going to be hanging of the edge of the tub. Also, is there any sort of bracket that goes inside of the tub or just the bolts alone?

#158 ·
Gen-Rights rear stinger comes with brackets that mount on the inside of the tub and bolt under the roll cage. So it is super stout.

Do these pictures help?

Great build! I really like it

In the final, final, final stages of finishing up the stretch.

There is an Off-road Show & Shine next weekend followed by a full day of rock crawling at The Flats Off-road Park. So I need to get this thing buttoned up ASAP.

Hopefully I can get this list completed by Friday:

  1. Limit straps installed
  2. Flasher mod installed
  3. Replace busted shocks (only one month old.. )
  4. Cut spring perches to allow room for shocks
  5. Get rear brakes checked
  6. Get spare Pitbull Rocker order and mounted on beadlock

First thing I needed to do was figure out how long my Limit Straps should be. So the wife and I built a ramp out of the best materials I could find...

Behold, the ramp of doom!

Melody getting the TJ lined:

Flexing out until the spring started to drop. It measured out to about 21". So now I'm not sure what to do, go with a 20" strap, or a 22" strap. Hmmmmm...

Discovered this problem is worse than I thought, so some trimming will be in order, along with another pair of shocks:

On a positive note, this is about max stuff and it is not rubbing, so I'm pleased with that!

I hear that limit straps like to stretch a bit, so even if you get a 20, your spring still might be able to unseat, or maybe it will end up right at 21. I might even go with a 21, so the spring can unseat a bit, just not near enough to fall out. Of course, ive never used limit straps, so take that for what its worth. Is it just me or is your rear flexing way more than the front?

I believe the straps only come in even numbers- ie 18, 20, 22, etc.

Regarding the flexing front vs. rear:

Rear = 4 linked stretched long arms, no track bar, no sway bar.

Front = Short arms, track bar, Anti-rock

So yeah, it probably flexes a little differently . However, it works on the street and on the trail. No vibes through 70mph on road and is as stable as a midget on a bigwheel in the rocks.

Limits straps
I disagree, polys can come in 21"s.

Well yeah, im sure that would make it flex differently, but it looks like a lot, but it could just be the picture.

I was dead set on 33s before I started reading this thread damnit..... Now I don't know what to think :rofl:. Once the lift is "finished" I'll have just a little over 3.5" and would LOVE to have my jeep look like yours...eventually that is.

DEFINITELY one of the nicest jeeps I've seen. I give it :2thumbsup:

#169 ·
Jay, it's been years since I've seen your TJ and its come a very long way. It looks very good, and nothing like I remember!
It has changed a little since last time you and I wheeled together.

What about getting the 22" straps and putting different mounting locations to set the strap length? That way you don't limit yourself too much with the 20" ones, and if the 22" ones are too long, you can just mount the upper part higher up to maximize the droop.
I was originally looking at Trent Fab straps, and they only come in even numbers, but after browsing the Polyperformance link posted up earlier, I may go with their 21"s. They are just a little pricey.
