Hello all,
Im ready to upgrade my front and rear. The rear I will be getting from ECG supply, it will be an 8.8 with 4.56. I plan on keeping 35" tires.

My question is, I can have a HP30 built from them for about $900. That's with 4.56 and stock shafts, my knuckles, ect.

What is the advantages of the HP30 over my stock 30 now??

The reason why I am asking is the cheapest re-gear price I got for the front was 1G, just to put 4.56's in.

So for the same price I can get a HP30 shipped ready to go.

Also will my currie HD bolt right up to the HP30?

let me know what you guys think.

There are about 1,000,000 threads regarding this. Go totthe bottom of the page and check out the similar threads section...VVVVVVV right down there.

You can build an HP30 yourself for cheaper the ECG can. I am done building my HP30 and totalled it all up and for what I built, I built it for $300 cheaper than ECG would have.

Find a better place to do your regear. My regear cost me $330 for labor, a lube locker and a new/used 4.10 carrier (mine had .020 runout).

The difference. High Pinion keeps your driveshaft out of the rocks, and runs the gears on the thicker stronger side (drive/coast...I forget) making them 30% stronger.

For me it was 150.00 for the HP D30. 600.00 for gears, install kit, help installing them. 239 for the aussie locker, 120.00 for new balljoints, 20.00 for upper control arm bushings. And about 30.00 in grinding wheels, sand paper, and paint. I used the axle shafts, unit bearings, and knuckles from the low pinion axle because the 93 HP D30 had the smaller u-joints. I have right about 1200.00 in mine. And it was about a 3 month project working on it when I had time. If you can get the axle from east coast for 900.00 shipped that is what I would do. It will save you a lot of time locating/pulling the axle, cleaning and painting the axle, and time for the shop to regear it.

Your currie steering will bolt right up. The advantages of the high pinion are strength, as well as better caster/pinion angles with a lifted jeep. I have adjustable uppers, but I believe the stock arms will work fine. The high pinion places the driveshaft a few inches higher than the low pinion.

Thanks guys. For the price of a re-gear, it just makes sence to upgrade to the HP30. When I priced it out it came to $967. I am going to re-use my knuckels and brakes. I am not locking it because we have terrible ice and snow here.
I would like a E-locker but dont have the extra 1,600 for front and rear.

ADD SHAFTS: Stock Shafts (+$80.00)

I went with stock shafts because it would have been another $500 for aftermarket shafts. I can always add those later.

you can also save a couple bucks sourcing the unit bearings yourself. We just got timkens for $60 each on amazon for a build. And take another 80 of if you reuse your shafts. Stock shafts are a little small for 35s but if you dont wheel hard itll be fine for the street, especially if youve been doing it with your lp30 already

I still can't believe you can't find someone to regear for less than $1k.

What are they charging you for? Find out what they would charge you for labor only and not parts.

Then search JF for a carrier and gears, and get your master install kit from northridge4x4 or 4wheelparts or something for $100. You should be able to get a 3.73+ carrier for less than $80 and get some 4.56 gears for about $100-$150.

Doing the math:
Gears $150
Carrier $100 (real high...guarantee you can get one for less than that)
Install kit $100
= $350
That means they are charging you probably over $650 in labor alone...which is freaking highway robbery.

Like I said, call them and ask them the charge for LABOR ONLY. You will provide the parts. Then run your numbers again...

I'm currently wheeling on 35" tires and stock d30 shafts. Nothing is broken, and my splines aren't twisted. I do carry spares just to be safe.

X2 but with 36" TSL's with low low pressure and beat it like it owes me money:2thumbsup:

ok guys thanks for all your input.
I went ahead and ordered a HP30 and a Ford 8.8 from East Coast Gear Supply.

I am going to re-use my shafts, knuckles, and unit bearings to save some cash for the HP30.
I went with 4.88s front and rear.

Chase at ECG was very easy to talk to and explained alot to me. He said I didn't need to spend extra money right now on aftermarket shafts, that the D30 and the stock 8.8s will be just fine for what I do.

I changed to 4.88s last minute because I read alot of threads on here that most people who went with 4.56s would have like to have gone 4.88s.

I have never done an axle swap. Do the front shafts just slide out of my 30 and will slid right into the HP30? That is really the only part I am nervous about.

I will do a separate thread when I get them, and any input on installed the axles will be greatly appreciated.

Like stated above, once the uni's are off they slide right out and back in. You can slide them in with the cover on but the long side is kind of awkward and heavy. Since you arent going to be wasting any fluid i would do the long side install with the cover off so you can see the seal and make sure you arent messing it up trying to find the hole (insert thats what she said joke here)

Yup, just remove the unit bearing by removing the 3 13mm 12pt bolts and using blaine's hub removal trick. Then just pull the shafts out.

#25 ·
also you dont have to take the unit off it can be done all in one piece unit bearing and shafts all together save you the trouble of taking the bearings off

#29 ·
 well the 175 ft/lbs is the spec for it...but most torque wrenches only go to 150ft/lbs and I don't know if most people are even strong enough to make it to 175ft/lbs anyways.

#64 ·
Well... you could always do the math by lengthening the length of the tq wrench.

If you have a 2ft wrench and push with 50lbs of force you get 100ft/lbs right? Then doubling the wrench length with a cheater bar would mean 4ft x 50lbs of force = 200ftlbs.

*******
Bottom line is (correct my math perhaps) ~15% longer bar would take your 150ft/lbs and turn it into the proper 175ft/lbs.

They should last long enough to save for a set of chromoly's. I have a spare set of stock shafts and once I have to use them I am gonna purchase a set of upgraded shafts.

Never mind

I believe the 99-up TJ hubs are different than the HP hubs, so if you use the hub units from the HP30 you will need to use the brakes from it also.

#50 ·
TJ or XJ, the hubs changed slightly during the 99 year. Some 99's have the old style, some have the new. You can swap new for old in axles from any year as long as you use the corresponding rotors. New hub/New rotor or old hub/old rotor. For example, I run a HP30 from a 96 XJ in my 04 TJ. So, I use old-style hubs and rotors in my newer TJ.

#49 ·
Cherokees, but you want post 89 or so for the non-vaccum disconnect, prior to 00 for the HP, and after 98 for the stronger ujoints if you aren't reusing your axle shafts.

#51 ·
i have a older HP30 so all my stock 98TJ stuff bolted right up and i went to the pull a part and got some units and shafts out of a 98 XJ for $22 for spares. i have yet to break my 30 running 36's running trails rated 4's and 5's. on a side note ive seen a TJ with stock 30/35 on 35's try to follow me and broke the 35 completly and chipped his ring gear on the 30 FWIW.
