Why do you want to lift your jeep? What is your automotive experience and backround? Do you have goals? Are their certain activities you would like to partake in?
Let me explain my story a little. I bought my Jeep 3 years ago, I never really thought about lifting it and doing anything crazy with it because at the time my mind was focused elsewhere. A year ago I got a spacer lift for my birthday, it came with only the spacers nothing else. So I thought well I might as well buy shocks and bump stops and lift my jeep. When I did it ignited a fire under my kiester to start off roading. The more time I spent tooling around the more I realized I needed more. So as it stands now I am piecing together my own lift utilizing parts that come highly recomended and that are of my own choosing.
My goal: To be able to attend the crawl for the cure benifit at Rausch Creek this summer.
You can see my parts list in my profile.
My advise would be to take advantage of the Rough Country 2 1/2 lift. Getting a good feel for how a lifted Jeep rides and go from there. You may end up doing exactly what I am or you may choose to purchase a kit for more extreme things.
And I want to lift it because I am currently running 32" tires and it runs fine (doesnt rub). I think it will just LOOK better with a bit of a lift. This is my everyday driver so my goals are purely cosmetic, I do not take it off roading often, and if I do it is not very extreme.
Thanks for the advice. I would also like a lift kit that is easy to install myself with basic tools.
That was just the first kit around my price range that I came by so I wanted to get some advice before I spent my money.
there are some things that you want to take into consideration when looking around for lift kits. the first major thing you want to do is decide how much lift, and how much you want to spend. you have seemed to be set on around a 2 inch lift and around $200-$300 as your budget. one thing you have to consider about your tj is if it has original springs, are they starting to sag causing rake in the front(where the front sits significantly lower then the back). if you are experiencing springs that are original you may want to consider the rough country 2.5" as stated before since it comes with shocks, springs, and transfer case lowering kit. taking into account the rough country is $299 and you get 10% off if you call and order and say your from jeep forum, i would say its definitely a lift to consider. i have this same lift and it levels out your jeep and it rides good, for a lifted jeep. as far as installation difficulty they both really are very similar, focusing on shocks and springs/spacers.
i got the same bug as JDePietro... it's that jeep thing
i'm taking one of those off my tj now... installing a RC 4" LA... wanna buy mine when i get it off? it has around 15k miles on the shocks, 1/2 price of new. :rtft:
Just installed the Rough Country 2 1/2" lift this past weekend. I would recommend this before spacers and shocks for roughly the same price. Pretty easy install specially if you don't live in the rust belt as I do. Afraid I may have gotten the same bug as JDePietro and stuff2c!
It's certainly not for everybody but if you want to put the money into it...
I was waiting for an AEV/Nth short arm setup but they just won't make up their minds to re-release it. Before that is was a BDS (can't beat that warranty!). I just knew I likely did not need anything larger than +3"
I just put the rancho 2.5" and rs9000xl adjustables in. Springs are a little tall yet, but its starting to settle. (At the bumper it was more like 4-5", but no wobble/banging at 80+ mph, so..)
I was originally gonna get the RC but I was talked out of it by my mechanic, and all the posts here saying "its been 3 months and the springs are shot so I took it out"..
Whole mess was about $1k and (except for a few stuck bits) only took about 5 hours to put in, air lines and all (for the in-cab adjuster).
