Hey guys I just picked up a "new" 5. I've already got an early 5 ('70) but it's proved to be a bit bigger project than I originally was looking for just to get it on the road so I thought I'd pick up somethin thats a little closer to what I'm looking for. I've done a ton of reading up on these of course but I'd really appreciate you guys telling me anything and everything about what I've got here...the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Thanks!

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm really looking forward to tinkering with my new toy. I of course have a LONG list of things in mind to add/change and even more questions to ask you guys about it. Here's a beginning to the list I've got in mind:
1) YJ brake booseter/master cylinder swap
2) Saginaw powersteering upgrade
3) "TeamRush" upgrade
4) Shackle reversal kit
5) Updated 4" lift w/ boomerang shackles
6) Warn Rock Crawler bumpers front & rear
7) Warn Powerplant HP
8) 33x12.50x15 BFG MT KM2 around Crager Soft 8's
9) Bestop strapless bikini top, windjammer, & tonneau cover
10) Tuffy stereo console
11) Sliders
I'm sure there's plenty more, thats just the things that came to mind.

Here's a couple daytime pics of the ol girl. The PO is calling the color pewter, I'm not sure what its called but I like it (still need to rattle can under the hood).

Wow, looks a lot like my 82! I had to go take a peek in the garage to make sure mine was still there! ;) Welcome to the family!

Your transmission should be a t-176 and your transfer case should be a Dana 300. Take your VIN # and go to CJOffroad.com - For CJ Owners by CJ Owners! and use their handy VIN Decoder, that will atleast let you know what your CJ had when she left Toledo.

Some upgrades I have done to mine that were a night and date difference - Research here at JeepForum the TeamRush Upgrade. Using off the shelf tuneup parts in the upgrade you can really wake up the 258. 100s of debates on here regarding the stock carb (Carter BBD), whether to rebuild or replace. There are lots of good articles on how to clean the BBD to get it running right, but ultimately I pulled an old MC2100 from the junkyard and ran with that. If i had it to do all over again, I would have done both of those right off the bat, and my Carter was in great shape. MC2100 also removes a few miles of vacuum hoses, just make sure you dont need to stay stock to pass local emissions. Then there is all that smog crap they saddled on our CJs.....

Also to a search on engine grounds. Guy on here named JeepHammer has written a really good write up on how to properly ground you engine.

Power Steering upgrade is easy as well, and really nice!

The VIN won't give you info on what 4 speed you have but by the looks of the interior photo, you got yourself the better T176 4 speed transmission instead of the weaker T4.

You know I was thinking of the Teraflex revolver shackles, my bad. Nothing wrong with boomerangs, Currie makes some good ones.

Alright guys I'm hoping you can give me some more input. Right now I'm working 13hrs/day, every day so I don't have any time to do any wrenching on the new 5 but I'd like to get ready for when I can in the next month. I'm thinking about getting some parts ordered but I want some input from you guys on the most sensible order of things. I've already got a YJ MC and brake booster so thats taken care of for the most part. Next comes the power steering conversion, if anyones got links to writeups or parts lists to do this conversion I'd really appreciate it. Then comes the TeamRush upgrade, I think I have a pretty good understanding of all I need for that but input is always welcome. Next, the shackle reversal kit along with lift. I haven't done a whole lot of research on qualities of kits for the late 5's yet or the real need for the shackle reversal; thoughts? Lastly I plan on doing a few minor interior/exterior tweaks ie new steering wheel, new levers, new knobs, getting all gauges working, roll bar pads, etc. Like I said I'm pretty new to the later model 5's so I'd really appreciate anything you guys can tell me about my options here.
Thanks!

The T4 will have a separate round shifter boot more towards the rear and the T176 boot is part of the Dana 300 TC boot as pictured in your photo. Crawling underneath you will see that your T176 is a top loading transmission and the T4 will have the shifter located further back on the transmission and just in front of the TC.
