I have had several lockers in the past, Detroit, Aussie, Auburn, and now Powertrax. They all have there pros and cons to each design, and all have a price tag that follows. As far as lunchbox style lockers go I feel Powertrax has taken the cake. For the money you cant go wrong with the Lockright or the no slip locker. Video of the No slip in actionInstallation is pretty easy too. Since we already were installing Alloy Axle shafts that helped shave a few minutes off from the install time on the no slip locker. First step for installation is to remove the diff cover and drain differntial. Next remove axle shafts. Refer to the link in my signature for more detailed information on the axle shaft removal. We were fortunate and didnt have any hang ups on removal of the axle shafts or removal of the carrier. All went very smooth and this was on a jeep that was 10 years old.

Once that is done, mark each bearing cap so that they will be reinstalled in the same direction and same side as before.

remove the rollpin that holds the main shaft through the spider gears. Once that is removed the spider gears can come out.

now remove the bearing caps and remove the carrier from the housing.

now that the carrier is out, have a work bench area cleaned off so that you can dissasemble the carrier and install the lockright

remove the ring gear from the carrier

make sure to note the original location of the carrier and ring gear. I used a zip tie on both the carrier and the ring to make sure that the ring gear didnt get clocked.

now you can begin installing the lockright

I read the the manual about 5 times prior to installing the locker. The directions were very straightforward, and easily understandable. Its nice to have this understood before doing the installation. Once the locker has been installed into the carrier, then install the carrier back into the housing in the reverse order of removal. If you read the directions and have a decent grasp on the concepts of differentials this is a straightforward installation.

I installed the locker per the directions supplied and it was a cake walk

carrier installed with the Lockright.

I cleaned the Diff cover, cleaned out the differential with some carb cleaner and installed the diff. last but most importantly make sure to fill the diff back up to the proper level with the proper lube:thumbsup:

Thanks Jerry, I placed in the Product reviews section a while back:thumbsup:

update: This thing is still working great, im still very impressed with how easy it locks and unlocks under transition. This is a much better diff then the Aussie locker that we installed on the last D30.

I put a no-slip in the corp. 8.25 rear of my KJ liberty a few years ago. It worked great with my automatic transmission and 30.5" all-terrain tires. I also put a detroit tru-trac in the front. My KJ drove the interstate from florida to moab, crawled all over moab for 6 days with never a problem, and drove all the way home. Around town driving everyday, it would ocassionaly unload with a bang. I was very happy with it overall.

I've wondered if you can possibly over reach the no-slip design with too large a tire. I plan to install one soon in my TJ front d30 and see how it does with my 33" mt's.

A question for 'barry'....When you removed your d30 ring gear, why do you have to index it to it's original position on the carrier when you rebolt it? I wouldn't think it mattered.

It's strong enough for at least 35" tires which is what I've been running on my front D30 mounted No-Slip for years. I've busted a front axleshaft and wheel some pretty darned tough trails with those 35" tires but the No-Slip has been problem-free for 7 years years now.

agreed, I figure why not put it back the way it was:thumbsup:

We had no issues with the install. Everything fit pretty good.

So do you have to take out the carrier to do this or did you do it by choice, I understood you could put it in without unbolting the Main bearings.

You have to pull the carrier with most gear ratios because the cross pin will not slide out without first unbolting the ring gear.

With a 3.07 gear ratio you can leave the carrier in the axle, but anything lower like a 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, etc. and you have to pull the carrier.

Soooo.. i have a dana 35 non- c clip axle and im doin this, will i have to pull the carrier? i have stock gears. also its in the rear (DANA 35)

Non c-clip or not, I would not install a locker into your older model Dana 35c. That it's not a c-clip design doesn't make the 27 spline axle shafts any stronger and they are what breaks once a locker is installed. :)
SO even driving carefully its still gonna break my shafts?? how about locking the front dana 30?? which is better to lock first front or rear? PS i just have a dana 35 not a dana 35c

You can take a chance if you like but I've had to help several Jeepers off the trail with broken D35c axleshafts and they were only running 30" tires. I personally wouldn't even consider installing a locker into any stock Dana 35 or Dana 35c axle. The only (!) way to remain reliable is to upgrade it to a Super 35 which uses 30 spline axleshafts but I don't know if they're available for a non c-clip Dana 35. If that is an option, I would call and talk with someone at Superior Axle who makes the Super 35 kit and see if they have something that would work for your 27 spline axle to beef it up to 30 splines. :)

Two questions

Is this the type of install that can be tackled by someone with minimal experience?
Does the ring gear need to be adjusted once it is reinstalled?

I only ask because it seems simple and straight forward but I wouldn't want to mess with it if any shimming of other finite adjustments are necessary. I leave that work to a professional.

Love the powertrax. Had it installed by a local shop when my bearings went out (xj). QUESTION: For a couple of years I would hear clicking when turning and once in a while a loud BANG! Then last month I heard the mother of all bangs from the rear and since then it's been quiet? Still works, Anyone had these problems?

Since you are in Michigan, how did the Powertrax do in the snow and ice? I want to add one to my Dana 30 front but I'm not going to do it if during the winter the Jeep is a hazard. For almost six months of the year my driveway is icy...

Since this was brought back from the dead I'll answer one of the questions in this thread. You do not have to remove the carrier to install the No Slip, in fact, for axles with C-clips you will actually need to install the locker with the carrier in the vehicle or at least I did when installing it into my Ford 8.8.
