well i know i have been talking a lot of junk lately about going to full width axles and its finally happening. Im doing this transformation on a separate thread than my regular build just to make it easier and less cluttered.

So this is where im at right now...

got everything ripped out from under blue and sold. Both axles are gone as well as all of the suspension. I traded someone my 4.5 RE springs for some 7" claytons and im building my own long arms. They are going to be basically like claytons arms just home-made. well to make this less boring, here are some pics....

axles are a hp d44 front and full floating d60 rear. both have 3" OD tubes

last pic before the breakdown

nothing under her

old axles

BTW you were right. USPS is a lot slower than paypal. :pout:

got some work done today that im pretty excited about....

first off had to pull the old carrier bearings off of the old carrier to hone out in order to use as setup bearings for the re-gear. we had quite a contraption together to get the pinion bearing off so i didnt have to track down and spend 26 bucks on another one. it worked out really well.

got all of the bearings and races honed out that needed to be and started putting the gears together.

first attempt, when i torqued the caps down to spec the ring and pinion wouldnt move so we took out .010 shim from the ring gear side to the other and put it all back together. its spun fine so we checked the backlash on it.

had to rig up another contraption to hold the yoke and keep the pinion from spinning that also worked flawlessly, i might add

specs for a 44 say B/L should be between 6-10 and we hit about 7.5!!:D

so we painted a section of the ring gear. GOLDEN:2thumbsup:

what do you think about the pattern? according to all the pictures that ive ever seen, id say its a good pattern.

we ended up calling it a night there so im really happy and can almost say i did my first re-gear. it still has all my setup bearings in it but tomorrow it will get all new bearings and races pressed.

near perfect pattern i'd say

nice build!! No locker on the 44? are you going to do one on the 60?

#44 ·
There will b a locker in the 44. With the initial setup , it's just easier to not have the spiders or locker in. It will b a Detroit EZ locker. The 60 will b welded.

bad *** Troy gear looks good, keep it up.

#46 ·
got the gears set today! everything is perfect :2thumbsup: hopefully they dont blow up h:rofl:

Yea, once we got it all together and within specs with the setup bearings we made, I ripped it all apart an assembled it with new bearring pressed on snug. Set tge pinion preload to spec, then backlash and painted multiple spots. Got almost the same pattern as above. It feels good to have gotten it out of tge way. Next weekend should b brackets and long arms up front and locker if it comes in then it's onto the 60:D

got some more done this weekend. we finished the second set of brackets and crossmember so i mounted mine up and installed my 231. we didnt weld it in or anything.

started piecing together all the brackets for the front axle as well.

we figured where all of the mounts need to go on the 44 so we should start tacking them on next weekend and putting it under the jeep. my buddy is going to cut all of the arms at work this week and bring them home. hopefully next weekend ill have the 44 under the jeep!:2thumbsup:
teaser for the long arms, i think they are going to look BA

and a new decal. my GF surprised me with it. mopar or no car!

and here is the jeep that inherited all of my old susp and tires. i think it looks sweet. ignore the key. lol

idk to be honest. the axles are a good 2-3 times heavier than the others. ive got bigger steel rims and much bigger tires. then the brackets, arms, ect. it cant be too much. few hundred? id like to weigh it one day and compare it to a stocker.

#65 ·
There is a truck scale to the left of the entry point Im securing for th nxt 4 hours lol. I'll weigh it when it done and post.

#69 ·
my buddy is cutting them at work this week. should have all the brackets on the front axles this weekend and start on the arms. im hoping to move pretty quick and get the axle under there:D

i also forgot to buy the smaller johnny joints (2inch) for the front uppers. i didnt even think about it. claytons doesnt sell them on their site so i have to get em from john currie. lol

#73 ·
probably but currie is out of cali so id have them in like a day or 2.
