I have IPF Harness and IPF Fatboys. Lowbeams were dead tonight. I swapped the relay with the highbean one(same relay) then i get lowbeam but not high. So looks like I got a dead relay. Problem is I cannot locate one anywhere . It is Proquip p1512X ......40A . Closest I can find is the P1512XP which is used for ARB air lockers. Anyone know if these relays are the same or had a similar experience?
According to the abbreviation descriptions on the proquip site the X means the relays have the same inbuilt protection. Just not sure what the extra P would mean on the ARB relay.
You should be able to replace that relay with one available from just about any parts store.
Not sure what they mean by "dual polarity" but I'll guess and say that the 85 & 86 relay pins are interchangeable. Some relays use a diode across the coil for spike protection where polarity is important here. The standard is terminal 86 is (+) positive and 85 is (-) negative. (Always consult with the provided documentation that came with the part.) If the relay uses a resistor for spike protection then the polarity doesn't matter - probably what you already have. Diode protection is better but the resistor is cheaper. Resistor types are more common. Either one is good enough.
How many pins/blades on the relay? 4 or 5?
(single-87, dual-87, 87/87a)
What syle? with bracket, without bracket, skirted?
(ISO mini relays)
Are there any markings on the relay?
(Above: ISO mini relay, 5 blade, dual-87 terminals, diode spike supression across 86, 85)
(If the relay contained a resistor instead of a diode, a simple rectangle will be displayed in place of the diode "arrow" symbol.)
5 pins. it p1512x listed here http://www.proquip.com.au/ProductPages/AutoElec/Relays.html. Looks to be a dual 87. No screw hole at top, just a square
Has Diac protection whatever that is.............P1512X12V, 40ADiacA1 FORM A
(2 x #87)
(A) Go to a "mom n' pop" auto parts store. Auto parts chain store have no talent working there. Ask them for a dual-87 (not 87/87a) terminal "Bosch", ISO mini, or "cube" relay with arc supression. Take note for resistor or diode supression markings on the relay (see post #5 again). Some harness manufacturers interchange the 85/86 terminals. Resistor type relays are common and are not polarized so they will electrically work in just about everything. If the relay has a diode, then you must make sure the polarity is correct for your particular harness. Either type of relay will work as long as the diode orientation is correct for your harness. If you have questions on this ask us.

Check out Susquehanna MotorSports,www.rallylights.com, for the following.
Nice guys in PA who answer the phone. They can help.
(B) RLYB2S6 Mini Relay SPST Dual 87, $8.00 http://www.rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=948
(i) call them to see what the difference between items HL87118 & HL87483. They only mention "12V, 40A"
(ii) no supression resistor, no supression diode, no supression diac (supression recommended but it will work)
(C) RLYB2S14 Relay 12V 40A SPST Dual 87 Diode Bracket, $13.22 http://www.rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=446
(i) Because of the supression diode, you need to make sure on your circuit that the 86 terminal connection is positive (+) and 85 is (-) negative or to ground
(ii) The bracket does not interfere with anything or you can cut it off
(D) call Susquehanna since I have purchased a no-bracket, resistor type dual-87 relay from them in the past but I don't see it on their site.
