just thought it would be a neat idea if someone could start a thread with only pics and info on home mods. write-ups wouldn't have to be included but a link to one would be nice if it is available. if someone likes the idea, start it up!

And here's the grand daddy project of the last few weeks (month?)
Reason for build: needed something beefier then stock to carry extra stuff that can't fit inside the jeep, such as jerry can for jeep and chainsaw, tire chains, winch cable extension etc etc ... it's all gonna hang off of there :D

TODO: Get full size spare :D

-It's got 3/4" by 2.5" by 4.5" d-ring tabs, meaning they go through the bumper and are welded from front and back :)

-3rd brake light in center hub of spare

- safety pin in case the latch breaks (two pieces of pipe, one on carrier, one on bumper with a rod that passes through and locks them in, in case the latch gives way)

- 2"x4" steel construction (3/16" thick) and boxed in with 1/4" plate on sides.

- 6 1/2" grade 8 bolts as mounting hardware :)

- Por 15 semi-gloss paint

- hinge made from 1" welded from bottom and top, with 2000lb trailer bearings. it sits inside 2.5" DOM tubing, spaced by 2.5"OD DOM tubing. Works well for now, very little play and VERY smooth to open and close. On the bottom there are two axle seals to hold in grease that's going to want to seep out on those hot summer days ;)

As you can see by the ceran wrap, still waiting for the cap :)

Still need to do a bolt-on carrier for the jerry can. Not sure if i want it on the left or right side though. Definitely not both, don't need that much fuel and weight.

here's a few before paint and grinding:

I replaced the OEM crappy dash speakers with 4x6 Infinity Kappa's. I cut the old speakers out from the original mounting plate and used that as the adapter to mount the Infinity's. Also, I finally found the squeak on the passenger side dash that's been driving me insane and fixed it.

I am actually more excited about the squeak being gone then the new speakers.

No, OEM was scrapped.
RnEmOvr That is one of the best looking homemade skids I have seen. How did you attach the trans mount to it?
For now I have it bolted to skid although I will end up doing a cross member

This bumper is homemade
You have write up on that dash?

Over last few months I rewired the entire thing and made my own headlight upgrade harness, I added the 3 relays needed (low/high/spot) into the factory fuse box.

^^^^ Thats how i was raised. "Safety is knowledge"

I wish I would have been raised around guns. My mom hated guns so they were never around, while my dad was raised around them. The first time I ever shot a real gun was in boot camp. My mom said she was going to give me a mothers note saying I can't shoot a gun (she was kidding but still)

Now I'm looking at getting a semi .45 pistol. Any recommendations? I've been told H&K makes a nice .45...

I can understand your concern. You are totally right about the responsibility issue. That's why he does not have unfettered, unsupervised access to our firearms.
You know...when my dad was 11..his grandmother would give him a bolt action 22 rifle, two 22 lr cartridges, and send him off to hunt. He was expected to bring a couple rabbits or squirrels home...and that's how his family got fed. Young people ARE capable of responsibilities far beyond our modern expectation. Also, my son is 13...not 8.

We're probably off of topic here.

I made this Rod Holder. The parts are bolted to a 2x6 that is 28" long. The PVC is 2" schedule 40 18" long and all the hardware is stainless. The screws that hold the straps are 1/4x3" lags, the portion that stuck out the other side of the 2x6 were cut flush with the wood. I attached two small pieces of 2x4 on each end to act as added support. It makes it easy to put it on wherever I mount it. I have strapped it to my front bumper and to my spare tire with a couple of small ratchet straps. I left the PVC long so I can use the as holders while I fish. This way the rods are held securely when I get a bite. It works well for me.

This is it on my spare.

If I go anywhere there may be low trees I put it on the front bumper with the straps as well.

The main front piece is the standard 3/16", 2"x4", 54" long. I ordered the front bumper plate, clevis mounts, fairlead adaptor, both hoops and side support bars from AtoZ. I told Zach I was trying to go for the Rokmen front Mercenary GT bumper look. The Rokmen bumper required the use of an aftermarket swaybar and I didn't want to go that route. Rokmen has great quality stuff but I didn't want to pay for something I can make. The Rokmen does use 1/4" vs the 3/16" plate from AtoZ. I thought about cutting the 2x4 bumper down to create an approach angle but after going through 4 small spools of welding wire I just wanted to finish..

From AtoZ the angle on the radiator hoop down bars was correct, but I had to cut out about 2" out from the middle to make it narrower to wrap tight around the head lights - and then cut it to my hood height. The front winch guard angles were correct and I just cut it down to the height I wanted. I angled the front bar about 20 deg. The main top plate was welded to the 2x4 bumper and then I added filler (more welding..). Since both items curved at the weld point it left a small dip at the junction between them. I wanted a relatively smooth top to help keep water from puddling and rusting out so that took a little while to get it to my liking. (..ok, I'm a touch anal). The front bumper piece is welded to the plate on all four sides and then plug welded.

I cut off the ends of the bolt on fairlead that sat under the winch, welded the front side of the fairlead piece to the bumper and then added 1/4" steel gussetting. There is also gussetting on the bottom of the top plate just outside the frame rails. ...and then I added light tabs. The AtoZ plate goes under the two top main bolts and the first swaybar bolt. I didn't like the angle of the swaybar bracket mount coming off the one bolt and the mounts back bolt sits a touch higher where the frame just starts to angle up. So.. I welded additional 3/16" plating to the backside of the main plate to sit under the swaybar mounts to give it one solid surface to sit on.

richs347, I really like that tube work ^^^^. Looks great. I know what you mean about just wanting it to be over....

Since we're posting winch bumpers and all. I got this warn 8274 winch for $200, and the guy said it had bad solenoids, which I was fine with. Come to find out, he just had them wired wrong, hahaha. So I put a lower unit rebuild kit in it ( $38 ), broke it down to its basic parts and sand blasted it, and painted it with wheel paint ( $15 ).

After words, I desided that I was going to modify my standard warn winch plate with winch guard to fit a 8274, which in not only larger, but a totally different mount style winch.

This is the warm plate after it was extended forward by 2 inches, the face of it was completely replaced with a 3/8 peice, added 3/8 gusits, and added my 1'' thick D-ring tabs.

Then, I gave it a coating of industal black engine paint, scuffed the paint, and added dupicolor truck bed coating.

ANd here it is all mounted up on the stock bumper with the winch guard mounted. I had to space and angle the winch guard a bit too. Its also coated in the truck bed coating. Sorry for the crappy pics, my camera hates floresnt lighting, which is all I have in my garage.
