My first post so go easy. Just started on a new to me 1984 scrambler project and installed a weber carb.(original carb was MIA) Engine is rough but will do for now. My question is: What do I do with the pulse air thing coming out of the cat converter? Do I need this for inspection? All that remains is the tube and the round part in the engine bay. I am sure this is leaking exhaust gases. Can I just cut it off and cap it? I think there is another tube on the passenger side of the cat converter to. how much of the emmisions bull do I really need? I would like to remove all of it with exception of the evap cannister. any suggestions would help. Oh, I am in North Carolina.

Well first we have to know what the emmission laws are in your area. IF they physicaly inspect your engine, you are not going to pass with a Weber. However, if all they do is a dyno test it is possible to pass with a Weber.

I think the pulse air sysem needs the computer installed. IF it's not installed it's not going to work. Whether you need it or something else. Again it depends upon your emmision regulations. You can always replace the cat with one designed not to need a fresh air supply

Here in Ohio they only test back 25 years, so you would just make the cut. I have 3 more years untill my 87 wrangler won't have to be inspected. Throwing caution to the wind, I installed a holley TA 470 4 barrel, offy intake, cam, header, HEI and MSD. With these mods I will have to have it checked one more time as we check every other year. I'm sure I will end up having to pay the 260.00$ for the waiver unless a miricle occures. However for the performance gains, it will be worth it.....but only worth it one time ha ha.

NC I believe only goes back 15 years. After that they just want to know your brake lights work. I am right down the road if you need any help, so don't be afraid to ask! Best thing to do is stop by one of the inspection stations (preferably the one you will go to in order to get the Jeep inspected) and ask what all they will check.

The Pulse Air System, controlled by the upstream and downstream solenoids, distribute air to the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter. The upstream and downstream solenoids are energized by the MCU. The MCU energizes the upstream solenoid to route air into the exhaust pipe just after the oxygen sensor and the downstream solenoid, when energized by the MCU, routes air into the catalytic converter. The additional routed air into the system reacts with the exhaust gases to reduce emissions. The system has the same effect of earlier Jeeps with air injected exhaust manifold by means of an air pump but without taxing the engine of horsepower.

Since you have installed a Weber carb, the system will no longer function because the MCU is not controlling anything. You can simply cap off the vacuum ports to the solenoids or remove the entire assembly and cap off the exhaust ports like I did. This all depends if your Jeep will pass the "visual" test and emissions testing for your state so make sure that Weber is tuned to the correct air/fuel ratio before testing.

I have posted before on vacuum hose hookups to a Weber carb using the factory air cleaner assembly. It gets rid of most vacuum lines and devices but keeps the ones that are necessary to reduce fuel vapors and EGR valve functions in tact.

These have to be the 3 best picture of the fuel system ever posted.

Did you use different colord hose clamps on porpose?
My son powder coated them for me. Red = Vapor Lines, White = Fuel Lines, Blue & Green = Vacuum Lines of various sizes, Black & Gray = Coolant Lines.

He liked using the powder coat gun so he could do his own stuff, that was the deal.

keith460 is the man !!!! best pics/info on a Weber/emissions

:2thumbsup:I have it hooked up basicly the same as the pics with a few variations but I know now what i need to do. Just installed a Daystar 1in body kit today, piece of cake!! really. the back cross member is rusted threw so after I return from Disney I am going to work on getting it of an sending to work with my brother to have it fixed. Thanks for all the replys I am sure this is going to be a long project for me, so all the help is appreciated. I tried to post pics of the body lift but i guess i am not to pc savy I need more space or something. agian thanks alot.
