Hello everyone,

I am looking for information from local Long Islanders who wheel out east. I just bought the State "Fishing" Off Road Vehicle permit and wanted to know what beaches are the best to visit.

Tomorrow I planned an excursion to Montauk Point and Hither Hills.. I will post some pics and tell you how it goes.

Out of the locations I can go with this permit which is the best? I am located in between Robert Moses and Montauk Point so it is an hour either way for me.

Thanks in advance,

-Danny

You can't beat Montauk. There are alot of cool spots I think some are NY State permit and other Suffolk County Beach permit and Green Key. There are some nice places right as you roll into Montauk's main street. Take a right through the IPA supermarket and you can turn either way on S. Emmerson Ave and you will see 3 or 4 spots to drive onto the beach. Another spot is about a mile or so east of town. make a left onto East Lake and follow that a ways and you can make right into Teddy Roosevelt Park, It goes onto the beach, people camp out their in the summer.

The Suffolk County Permit is $93!!! Plus you have to purchase a Green Key for $24 but that lasts two years. So your total is $117....no thank you.

The New York State Parks Permit is $65 and that gets you into a lot of parks in Montauk like Hither Hills, Napeague, in addition you get access to Robert Moses, Gilgo, Democrat Point, etc.

Hope this helps,

-Danny

Don't get me wrong, I love wheelin, but if you bought the 4x4 Fishing Permit use it for just that...it's 4x4 access to the beach for fishing. If you're going to treat the beach like a 4x4 park and ruin it for the rest of us please don't go.

There aren't any legal places on LI to wheel.

I live out east and have my own wheeling spots and don't need to tear up the beach. Two words to live by: Tread Lightly.

Not flexing my keyboard muscles just making a point. :)

I have been a Surfcaster for over ten years now, the past two years I have owned Jeeps. Last year I had access to a boat so I did not need to go off-road to get to good fishing holes. However, this year I have no boat and but I do have a new Rubicon.....guess what I registered the Rubi for 4x4 access.

I happen to use the permit today after the Montauk Parade, I visited Montauk Point and Hither Hills. Nobody was out there fishing at either spot.

All the other spots I found were Suffolk County Beaches or Southampton Town property. I need a list of what beaches are State and what ones are off limits = County/Town.

The NY State Permits Booth ran out of booklets to give out with the permits, so I am SOL until I find something online that differentiates what "Montauk Parks" stands for because that is all that was on the permit itself.

If you have the above information feel free to post it here,
However if you would like to catch up and hopefully land some Strippers on April 15th, hit me with a PM. :cheers2: Sorry for the long post.

Keep the shiny side up,

-Danny

The beach down the end of East Lake drive past the airport is county. No good surfcasting there. Awsome camping on the beach though. There is an entrance on your right as you pass the light house that is State park. If you travel north on the beach you eventually end up in the county park and can exit the park on East Lake drive. South of town heading back west is town of southhampton park. Permits are availble for residents. I think non residents can buy one too but it will cost you southhampton prices.

Someone stated earlier that these are "fishing permits". If a park ranger stops you and you dont have the proper fishing equipment for everyone in the vehicle you can get a fine and or your permit taken away. They dont mess around. Years ago an old friend of mine (rip) was the son of the LIBBA president and was caught in an area he should not have been and got his permit taken away. LIBBA fights hard for the beach access. When there members see someone doing something they should not be on the beach it gets called in.

Yeah I heard the same. But with all due respect, you are driving down a BEACH and there is an imaginary line to where the State or County or Town "own" it? I am just saying because I drove up and down the North side of Montauk Point and only had to pull off because there was a seal observatory area fenced in.

What I am asking is there a sign or designation to where the beach ends? This could get hairy if I am asked for my Montauk County permit when I am fishing with my State permit. You with me?

Regardless, thank you for your input on everything. Us Jeepers stick together.

Yes there is an imaginary line. Where is it? I dont know. But its there. If you ask at the ranger station at the end of East Lake I'm sure they will tell you. I havent driven that stretch in years. Now I just go down the beach to camp mostly. If I want to go wheeling I head to PA, CT or MA

craigslist it man...thats the way to do it...had 6 calls on my f-350 in the first 40mintues i put it up..it was sold 3 days later for more than I thought id get for it =)

Bought and sold my old TJ on Ebay. Got a great deal on it, then sold it for more than I thought I'd ever get.

I think it's all relative, because if the XJ was worth a couple grand more then I would "invest" the $50+ for an ebay auction.
I am only selling it for a little over a grand so I don't want to dump money into auctioning it. You know what I mean ;)

Thank you,

Still hoping to see you around Demo this weekend!!!!! How is the weather going to be?

Wet beach isn't bad for driving, sucks for fishing depending on how windy it is and what direction it's blowing.

Just took a quick spin today after getting my permit. Didn't even bother to air down, wasn't planning on going all the way around to the back. But did anyway, no struggling at all.

Smitty's is opennnnnnnnn as of a few days ago looks like im going to have to go buy my permit soon......

#51 ·
That is great, when are you going fishing?

I grew up at Smitty's and would never say it wasn't a great place to go, however, I can't see spending the $110+ to go out there.

Good luck and I hope you catch enough fish to pay that permit off in home cooked seafood dinners  Yum

Be safe,

-Danny

This is a dead thread but I'm unsure where else to put this. I want to get a beach pass for this summer but dont know what I need. I live about an hour away from the island so is it even worth taking the trip down there for it? What kinds of passes will I need to buy. I've read about green keys and empire passes...can someone clear all of this up for me? thanks

#53 ·
empire pass is a standard state parks permit, it gives no 4x4 access. you would want to get the NYS beach fishing permit. plenty of info on that with a little googling.

The green key is for the suffok county permit. first you have to get a green key, then you can get the beach permit

dont mean to offend the fishermen, however i dont agree with 4x4 access as "fishing only" I have permits for cape cod (nauset and national seashore) all access, you want to fish, great...you can swim, surf or just hang out...the beaches are for all to enjoy, they need to drop the 'fishing only' and open it up.

I been reading this post and maybe this last experience will shed some light as to why they seperate the beaches.

I went to Oak Beach in mid July it was crowded with plenty of dissrespectful people. People swimming in the fishing area (how the hell u suppose catch something); walking their dogs illegally and not cleaning up after them; leaving garbage around; one moron was flying his kite next my Jeep and it landed on the vehicle next to me roof. (that guy was angry). In the meantime, I was staring him down.

What takes the cake was when I reeled in my line for just a moment to grab a water. My rod still had my bait and hook on it, and little 3 year old girl walking with her father just decides to run to my rod and grab the bait with hook in it. I yelled at her immediately, her father just sat there like a friggen moron and she ran away from it. I really wanted to kick her father's teeth in. He had time to say "No"

On my way out that day, a group of people were blocking the trail and playing some game with garbage barrels right in the middle of the trail. I crept real slow and thier all giving me dirty looks and one guy was sitting on his chair right on the trail yelling or something. So when my rear end got past him, I accidentally gave it too much gas LOL! Oh Well!

To answer question Skiquattro, and not to offend you, with so many people in LI and being that LI is known fishing area; seperating the beach up in like categories, makes it so everyone could be safe and really enjoy thier passtime and hobbies without anyone else getting hurt.

I often find that Burma road at smiths point has many little areas to pull off, i like to consider these private beaches, great for a day with just you and the gf if ya catch my drift ;)
plus burma road is a nice little change of wheeling at the beach
