Got an old tired 304 I am looking to rebuild and hop up in power. Would like to fuel inject, 4bbl intake, hedders, a nice cam and a conpression ratio at around 9.5 to 1. Head work as necessary for 300 hp. Must have good slow going crawling ability. any combonations that are proven?

I like jeepjimmy's suggestion. Only addition is that I love my Holley Projection and compared to the alternatives it is cheaper. Also, mine is mated to an Edlebrock Performer intake - easy install.

if you can do away w/the 304, get a 360. w/it you can run sbc 400 stock bore pistons for 18 degree heads, if you bore the 360 .045 over. this should put you in a 9:1 range. 360 is more viable option for power. also you could always swap in a 401 crank and get a 390+CI stroker!!!
good luck

Get ready to empty your wallet!
I built a 304.
Started at the machine shop and did it right. Soaked the stripped down block in the hot tank and pressure washed it inside and out to remove all the scale, gunk and deposits. then had it bored .030 over, the crank machined and a new valve job. also new cam bearings pressed in and the rods magnafluxed to check for cracks. all courtesy of my local machine shop, to the tune of $1800.00 including the master rebuild kit, pistons, valves.
then i brought it home painted the block and added an edelbrock performer cam,intake,500 cfm edelbrock carb, and sureseat valve springs ,new hedman HTC headers.and a mallory coil and dual point distributer ( this i wouldnt recomend, they didnt have the hei distributers available when i built this motor. I will upgrade soon)
I have a T-5 and 300 out of a 6cyl jeep behind it. not sure what the gear ratio is but its out of the 82 cj7 i took the tranny out of.
anyway it runs fantastic, plenty of low end, and creeps along at idle in first gear low range, On the highway i dont even touch 5th gear. i plan to change the gearing to take advantage of 5th being so high
the only draw backs ive found so far is #1 the money, a GM 350 would have been cheaper to build but i dont know much the adapters and extra time spent cobbing a foreign motor into it would add up to. #2 That damn distributer. and #3 the carb floods out on the steep hills. ( ive got the edelbrock off road kit but havent installed it yet, we'll see how that works)
Other than that i'm very pleased with it!
good luck

Thanks for the input fellows, I want to stay away from carbs due to the altitude changes and angles of the dangles. I have been told to swap in a Chevy 350 but I hate to have a Chevy in my Jeep, nuff said bout that. Is there an after market head builder I can bolt on? What in the story with the Howel injection systens, good, bad?

I havent got a tach yet but shifting to 5th at 55-60mph on the flats it lugs down and feels like its going to stall
