Took a trip to lowes today to buy some MDF, bondo, wood glue, ect ect.
Gonna start building a new sub box to replace my old POS in the back of the TJ. This is gonna house a single 12" Image Dynamic IDQ sub, running off a Alpine PDX 1.600.
I'm looking for previous build ideas. What did you build? Dimensions and measurements? Ect ect. Thanks
ridiculously overpriced which is why im going to build my own version of it, i like it because if you lock your tailgate it would be "harder" for someone to take it. It's also hidden pretty good for wandering eyes, down firing design (best for open top driving)
Overpriced? Not really. Highest quality you can get.
And as for it taking up the whole trunk area, those are the trunk style enclosures. He makes single enclosures that sit on the right hand side of the cargo area.
what are you trying to achieve by fiberglassing a box? if your going to use a square-ish design like the ones listed so far straight up mdf is a better plan. fiberglass is weak over flat areas as it flexes too much while mdf is much more rigid for MUCH less money.
and usually when people say bondo they mean body filler. you mean bondo brand resin. if you are intent on glassing a box look into a local boat store or something and get some good resin. the bondo brand has a quick dry formula or something and it sets up very fast giving you a limited work time.
I bought my just4effect.com box because sure I could buy mdf, carpet, a terminal cup, rhinoliner, and make my own but it would just be a pain in the butt trying to figure out all the angles to make it fit snug. Ron does and awesome job. Not to mention the price of my box was $175 and that was shipped door to door. It is well worth the money, if I saw it in person, I easily would have been willing to pay more.
While this may not be the most visually pleasing console of all times I thik this is a great example of another place in the Jeep a sub can be located with a little creativity.
If you really want to do a fiber project (I'm going an amp rack myself altho I wish I had more time as the project is dragging) look into a design like below. I've seen a couple different versions of this and they even did a similar set-up in a pink TJ on unique whips (sadly no longer on their website www.uniqueautosport.com), replaced by a ghetto JK).
Im using two kappa perfect tens behind the rear seat. I cant remember what year they moved the rear seat release handle but if yours is on the bottom and you are pretty exact with your measusring you can make it unstealable. I think i remember the measurements as
6"at top
10" at bottom
36" across
12" high
The slant makes it so you cant get the box out without folding the rear seat and you cant reach the handle without opening the rear gate. Ive been real happy with it.
I dont think spife realized you were using mdf and just coating it. we know what happens to MDF when it gets wet, its like a tampon. lol sorry its early. on mine i did two layers of resin just for the waterproofing. I made a single ten box to go backthere and i did the bondo prime paint and it looked GREAT for about a week till it got banged up =(
i made a trapezoid-like box that fired down so that two of the side were a little longer than the rest ( too keep the sub from hitting the floor). got 1 cubic foot from it and it fits behind the rear seat in my tj. i got a physically smaller sized amp and mounted it under the dash. that way the only thing running to the back is the speaker wire. when i need more space or am going to have it parked with the top down for a while i just unplug the sub and cap the speaker wire and take the sub out.
