Looking to hook up with some beginning to intermediate off-roaders in the San Diego area.

I am a newb to jeeping but not to common sense. I bought a jeep to try, and if I like it I will buy another and give this one to my daughter.

I am truly a quick learner and looking for other beginners or some old salt that is just willing to share the wisdom of their experience.

I would like to go jeeping at least once a month and of course more during the learning stages.

Currently, fire roads are all I have found around hear and a few construction areas.

What I am proposing is that all the way south newbs UNITE... if we can find some old salts to come along we can all learn faster. But I say lets get this thing rolling...

WHO IS WITH ME....?

Current jeep is

88 YJ
31x10.5.15 BFG ATs
I6 258 carbed
Pretty good condition but I am replacing all the parts that should have been replaced ages ago. (Hoses/clamps/Top etc...)
(The jeep sat for 3 years so I'm shaking out all the cobwebs...)

I'm starting to build a laundry list of things i need to do on my jeep. Change brake fluid, change differential gear oil, body lift, change serpentine belt, change transmission fluid, do something about my front springs. i'm also realizing how little money i have. I got my work cut out for me at the next party.

Jeff, when you end up geting new tires keep me on the list for your old tires. Wouldn't mind taking them off your hands.

I'm not sure if i can make it this weekend, also due to short funds.
It never ends. The good news is that elbow grease is free. :cheers2:

Stay away from a body lift more than 1". Save your money for a proper suspension lift.
Thats as high as ill go. I already have a 1" daystar lift, just need to get it installed.

Dont you know it! Im planning to knock half that out this weekend. Ill just need some help with the brakes. I read a howto but, i could use someone that knows what they where doing.

I want to change my brake fluid too and I gathered up a bunch of parts to make a pressurized bleeder. Hold off until I get that organized. Longshot to get it ready by this week.

Do you need brake pads or just a bleed?

I hate it when that money thing gets in the way :rantscream:

The fluids change out isn't something you need to wait on though. You just have to get some sort of hand pump to fill the transmission fluid. Either that or take off the shifter boot and remove that plate from your floor board.

On a different note.....

For those who either don't work a regular 9-5 or just don't want to go to work one day next week I am planning a weekday run. It will be either Tues, Weds, Thurs of next week and either Coral Canyon or a desert 'circuit' run (squeeze, sandstone canyon, diablo dropoff, mud caves). I have all of next week off so the day of the run depends on what day the most people can go. Let me know if you can make it on any of those days!

Im not taking that shifter boot and floor board off again! that thing is a PITA. Im going with the pump, plus they are pretty cheap and handy.

I could if i had more notice. Just take a day of leave and head out. Next week is just cuting it too close.

I just need to do a bleed, my brake fluid is pretty dark/black. Sounds good though, just give me a heads up when you finish it and are ready to give it a go.

We can add the black Jeep to the bleed list, Jimmy and Jason did a brake job on it last week and the pedal is super soft, needs a bleeding.

And seeing the pic of Jimmy blasting thru the creek, nothing subtle about that water crossing, reminded me that we should do a diff/trans/etc fluid check after having everything underwater for those that were out there. Maybe do a fluid day when Todd, umm I mean Nate, is ready. Get a big jug of oil, some RTV and do them all.

And I know that I could use an oil and filter change too

a total toxic waste day:cheers:

Jason wants to go out mid-week next week, he has family in town and wants to get out but not go alone (apparently he learned that lesson,)

Corral Canyon this Saturday (3-22) after the meeting at Cuyamaca College, about noonish or so. Run up to the top of Bronco Peak and then do Sidewinder, should be back in town well before dark.

Next on the agenda is a possible overnight trip to Aqua Caliente campground and do a desert circuit run on the following weekend (March 28-30)

And apparently we're going to get a repair day in somewhere too

Cross Post:

I met with Barb Takahashi a few minutes ago. She is the Senior Administrative Secretary for Cuyamaca College. Very nice lady. She made a few phone calls for me to Congressman Duncan Hunters office and to the college security folks. Then informed me that parking will be free for those attending the meeting.

She didn't know off the top of her head how many seats were available in the two conference rooms. So I suppose it's possible that folks will be standing. I'll know more tomorrow after I speak with her associate Pam who is incharge of the Student Center Facility rooms. We will basically have two joining conference rooms in the "I" building on the second floor.

If at all possible, I would try to park in Student Lot #1 and walk towards the Student Center, "I" building.

Here's a link to the campus map for those who may have missed it:

See ya there Joe.

So i passed the smog test, i am more than shocked. I figured they would fail me for the check engine light, or for the no spedometer, or definitely for the emisions, but whatever. Good for 2 more years. Now im gonna give the jeep a bath, and wish that i had money to fix him.

That calls for a celebration. :cheers2:

I was thinking about your situation the other day.

So the options are either find another, proper year, ax5.

Or, rebuild the original and put it back in with the matching transfer case.

Or, dig up the old research we did and try to find an ax5 out of a toyota cheaper.

Or, spending $ on making a front driveshaft prob does not make sense.

Welli found out my jeep doesnt like 30 degree weather. The locker locks up, and the transmission makes some scary noises when you are driving. Not fun.

I gave my friend my np231, but he didnt need it, but i dont think i will get it back for 7 months when he comes back from deployment. I might rebuild my ax-5, but i need money.

My goals.

-Try to make my current TC/Tranny setup work with 4wd
-Replace all the u-joints
-Change a bunch of fluids
-Figure out why my transmission was moving around when it was 30 degrees out, but not when its warm out.
-Figure out why my locker engaged at 40mph
-Fix my soundbar
-Fix the herculiner
-Maybe fix my vibes

...to be continued

Ive got a transmission, and a crappy transfercase, but i have the old ax-5 that i want to rebuild, and then i would need my old np231 that i gave away back.
rebuild seems like the logical thing, unless you can find another ax5 for cheap then sell the setup you have. But, now you have to get a front yoke and driveshaft setup.

what are the odds that you can get the 231 back soon? I wonder if that yoke would fit on the 207?
