Steering resistance while turning

I can feel somewhat of a pull or resistance in the steering wheel while I'm turning. It feels almost as 4-wheel is engaged but the t.c. slector is in 2h and the part time indicator is off. I'm concerned that my four wheel is not disengaging fully or that there is something wrong with my power steering pump. There is a slight drone when turning, but it is not very loud or anything that I would consider out of the ordinary. Is this common for XJs or is there something wrong? I have only had my 99 classic for about 2 weeks so I'm learning how it drives and its characteristics as I go. Thanks for any help.

I haven't really seen to many people on this forum with steering problems. Have you checked the steering fluid, maybe its low. An easy and fun way to see if your in 4wd is go in an empty parking lot, put it in reverse and punch the gas. If you peel out your not in 4wd, if you reverse really fast without any squeeling, your in 4wd. If you are in 4wd, you may want to check the t-case fluid. Many people over look this in fluid changes. Its takes regular transmission fluid. Hope this helps.

I have a 2001 and have had the exact same problem. It feels as if the steering "pulses" as I turn left or right as it returns to center. I can even see the steering wheel bounce slightly in my hand when I'm turning. It only happens from a standstill (from a stop sign or red light, etc.). I had the steering checked by my mechanic and he couldn't find any problems. Everything has been lubed and checked, so I'm not sure if maybe this is just normal for the Cherokee?

Imagine, you described my exact problem with the same exact symptoms!!!!!!! The dealer claimed to have completly inspected the jeep before I bought it, so maybe this is just a characteristic of the Cherokee. I have never driven a car or truck with power steering that acted like this so i thought maybe something was wrong. Thanks,

Eric
