5 point Harness Question

I know for roll cages you want to use DOM steel since ERW's seam can split. But for the horizontal bar that goes behind the seat that the harness mounts to, is it ok to use ERW for that since it wont be acceptable to impacts. Just the pulling force of the harness?
Thanks in advance.

No, but do you plan to loop the belts around the tube or weld a lug/tab on and bolt it on?
Your plan is to build the hole cage out of whatever size DOM and then just buy one chunk of HREW for the shoulder belts?
Me I would use whatever size your cage tube is and just use that for the shoulder belt bars, what are you gaining in buying a little cheaper in cost material?
And if its connected to your cage it will see "impacts" as the energy from a rollover distributes threw out the cage as a hole, not just in one/two points of impact, or at least a proper built cage will.

The reason I was thinking ERW was because I already have some and I have a tight budget. The tube is going to be bent to clear the back of the seats so it will not be a brace of any type. The only strength it will need is that of the harness pulling at it in an accident or offroad incident. How much different is ERW than the tubing that factory CJ roll bars were made of?

While I'd prefer DOM, and it's all I buy now, I wouldn't have much of a problem using HREW for a harness bar.. or even straight shots of cage material. One of my old CJ5s had HREW for the harness bar and the "X" in the B-Pillar. I rolled that Jeep a few times and even did a backwards endo with it. The HREW held up fine.

DOM is obliviously going to be preferred over HREW, but I'm going to back up BESRK's comment that for this application you're probably going to be fine. You have much bigger problems if there's enough force to split the tube.http://jeepspace.jeepforum.com/BESRK
