what do you mean by out: bolts, actually pulling it off the block or finding room above the axle to get it out of the way

Jack the Jeep up by the unibody, or "frame" somewhere up front. That will create some more suspension travel and give more room.

sounds like a good point to install a lift. I have 5 inches up front and i still had to jack the frame up to get the pan off (did the rear main seal yesterday). i would try jacking the frame up as high as possible if that is still not enough, try removing the swaybar because that limits suspension droop a lot. if that doesn't work remove the track bar. if you do end up having to remove the axle, you should definetly consider installling a lift kit because you will not want to drop the axle again (kill two birds with one stone)

to make mine easyer i just took the front axle out it let me clean all the oil off that was leaking in i painted mine and switched the fluid. it wasnt that hard especially if you have another vehicle to drive and a friend to help

Sway bar links off? Shocks disconnected? Front DS removed?

As a last resort, control arm bolts loosened (but NOT removed) at both ends? (If you do this, be sure to put the XJ back on the ground under it's own weight before retightening these bolts)

I disco'ed my lca's and swaybar. I also loosened my uca's. This gave me enough room to replace the pan, which can be more frustrating than removing it.

Good luck

The Haynes Manual says to take the scatter shield off the transmission, and take the steering stabilizer off. Thats what I did on mine (2wd though) and the pan practically fell out.

Factory Service manual says this:

OIL PAN
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect the negative battery cable.
(2) Raise the vehicle on hoist.
(3) Drain the oil.
(4) Remove the oil pan lower cover (Fig. 45).
(5) Remove the bolts from oil pan. Remove the 6
bolts that are on the inside of the oil pan.
(6) Remove the oil pan.

Not sure if it could help but my trick on a ford 302 on a F150 was to drop the pan as far as it would go the unbolt the oil pum and drop it in the pan. For installation I just put the new pump in the pan and reverse ordered everything.
